filtering logistics question

Lets say you are using chlorine dioxide tablets and have only one water container.
Out in the bush the water source you find is dirty.
You worry about the silt impeding/delaying the purification process.
So, you want to run it through your bandanna or other piece of cloth.

So, how do you get pre-filtered water into your one bottle/bag?

I use a Sawyer filter rigged from a tree limb to dribble filtered water into my camelback. You can use a coffee filter, paper towel, bandana etc for a mechanical pre filter.
Check out www.bepreparedtosurvive.com, they have aqua pouches and all kinds of survival stuff.

I take my bandanna and use some inner tube to fix it to my bottle and then I fill the bottle straight from the water source, once I'm done I remove the bandanna and add the tablets.

Many people have suggested using a coffee filter to prefilter water before chemical treatment or boiling. THe problem is that while the filter is small and packable, it is not self-supporting. Can you iimagine trying to hold a paper filter cone while pouring water though it?

I came up with something to address this. It is essentially a plastic cone you put the paper filter inside of to support it while you are filtering water. What you do is take a quart-sixzed freezer bag and lay your filter on i so that the bottom of the cone is in one of the two bottom corners. Now take a sharpie and draw a curved line on the bag just above the top of the filter. (This is your cut line.) Next, draw a curved hump with a circle inside of it on top of the cut line. This will create two places to tie a hanging loop. If you want, you can leave the bag intact and keep a couple of paper filters, your Micro-Pur tablets, an oven bag and a small piece of string inside of it until you need to use it. Alternately, you can cut out the filter support and put it in your kit. It weighs nothing and takes up almost no space.

I'm on vacation right now but I'll post a picture or two when I get home.

You could try one of these:

SteriPEN® FitsAll Filter (FAF-ADP) - NEW ACCESSORY! Use the new SteriPEN FitsAll Filter to remove particulates from water with the use of a durable 4 micron screen. It is recommended that particulates be removed prior to treating water with a SteriPEN UV purifier.

The FitsAll Filter’s unique design offers flexibility to filter water into bottles with a wide range of mouth sizes. Water can be poured through the FitsAll Filter or you can submerge the combined FitsAll Filter and bottle of choice. The SteriPEN FitsAll Filter cup and funnel fit into narrow-mouth bottles such as commercial water bottles, soft-drink bottles, canteens and SIGG™ bottles. On wider-mouth bottles, such as Klean Kanteen®, Gatorade® and Nalgene® bottles, only the cup is necessary.

The FitsAll Filter cup also serves as an adapter that allows the SteriPEN Journey or Classic to be used with these wide-mouth water bottles in the inverted position. Weighing only 65 g (2.3 oz.), the FitsAll Filter is made with rugged, flexible materials that allow the filter to be squeezed during storage and return to shape when unpacked. Nested storage dimensions are 88mm (3.5 in.) x 95mm (3.7 in.) x 72mm (2.8 in.).

Carrying along a ziplock bag or two can be a help. They are light and take up little room.

However if you don't have one you could use another bandanna or piece of clothing like a sponge to soak up water and wring it out over your bottle.

Even more serious, unless you pour VERY slowly the bottom seam busts out.
