Years ago when I was living in Kathmandu there was some international magazine -- can't remember which one -- that published an article entitled, "The World's ten Filthiest Cities." Kathmandu was right up there. As you can see 15 years later things have not changed all that much.

This picture was taken during our journey to Nepal in February.

You're sure that wasn't taken in the parking lot of my apartment complex? Seriously, that's what it looks like some days around here.

Of course, one problem with densely populated areas (seen this in Europe and Mexico) is where do you throw the garbage? No land to dump it and no wealth and technology to recycle it. Catch-22.

Hello Bill
The problem is that we have a need to dump at all.Every thing out there today is packaged in something, that will out last the product that was in it.Then the product it self, though it my be usefull, will be out of date or fashion so we will buy the upgrade and now the product is in the dump with the packaging.Nepal and other poor countries, may pile it in the streets,we have it in our streets too,the rest a truck takes it to a dump site,it's still there,we just move it away from our homes. We live in a world of waste, that we,with all of our advancements can do nothing about. We send people to the planets, someday we will be sending our trash.

Wow, amazing, must really smell! Reminds me of when I was in the Philippines. One of the cities I visited had a river there that we use to call sh*t river and I don't think I need to explain why we called it that. The unfortunate thing about it was, that there were kids who use to dive into that water, for pesos, to earn a living. I also remember walking around Manila and seeing two dead men in the streets and people walking by as if there was nothing there.

Stu and Ray, here we move it and/or hide it. In Nepal they don't have the money to do that.

Actually, the filth has become worse since I was there years ago and this is because of tourists and affluence in Kathmandu. Generally speaking, the more money the more waste, the more waste the more filth.
