The working name for this piece was "Five Bucks". Some of you will understand.
I wanted to see if I could do justice to the "classic" Rick Marchand cord wrapped style, with a bit of me in there as well. I hope I succeeded.
I built this one a little different than Rick does his. My handle has a mortised hardwood core too which the wrapping was added, and my guard/pommel slots are drilled and filed rather than hot-formed to the tang. And, I used dyed jute twine rather than hemp. All in, this piece took me about 30ish hours.... not quite as quick as Rick I'm thinking.
I should admit that I also blatantly stole a second of Rick's trademarked techniques on this piece. I'll let him figure it out.
Fin(aka Five Bucks)
Blade: 7 1/2" x approx 3/16" of brute de forge 1084 carbon steel, flat ground, hand sanded to 600 grit then etched to slightly darken. Still needs to be sharpened.
Handle: Epoxy impregnated jute cord wrapping around a mortised hardwood(walnut) core, textured and heat-colored copper on front and back with a peened tang.
Sheath: Fully lined and textured 6/7 oz veg tanned leather(Wickett and Craig) with a removable belt loop collar, buffed mink oil finish.
Thanks for your interest.
