I have reviewed your responses of my last post. Some people have stated that the Sebenza does not have the ergonomics of some other folders. This quality is important, so I have again narrowed the choices. Here they are: Spyderco Military, Microtrech SE. Please give me any and all thoughts on which one might be more appropriate as an EDC. I realize they are both large, that is what I want. Price wise they are somewhat different, around 80 dollars. Thanks.

I've handled both, and I can say that both have their strong and weak points.

SOCOM Elite:

1. the microbar kicks the hell out of a liner in strength and relyability. And it's fun to play with too.

2. Overall, the SOCOM will be much stronger.

3. Serrations on the SOCOM suck.. alway get a plain edged one.

4. Quality of the SOCOM is better, so is fit & finish.

5.pouch

6. More options to choose from.

7. You can make inlays for it

8. some people don't like the ergonomics (which does not include me !)

Let's hear it for Spydeco Military :

1. Lighter while being strong enough to do whatever you ask of it.

2. Linerlock makes an addictive sound and is excecuted perfectly... Pivot pin is not concentric, so with some skill, you can compensate for wear (at least the Terzuola does have this)

3. better steel but less tough and more stain resistant.

4. Spyderteeth rule !

5. Some people do not like the fact that it has only one liner.. I don't mind really. You can feel the G-10 bend when you whiteknucle it, but it causes no problems with the lock.

6. Probably better ergonomics.

7. Less quality , but price/quality is better.

8. less features then the SOCOM E... this a more work-horse-knife then the SOCOM-E which you can show off with too. Compared to a SOCOM E, a military can seem casual.

Both were concieved as military knives, but I feel the SOCOM E is better in it's place there while the Military is better as an everyday utility knife. Both are worth they're money bigtime If you ask me. And you're right about sebenza's.. their ergo's suck. nothing personal tough, but compared to a BM pinnacle they aren't worth three times that.

For the record.. I carry (yes, if fits my pocket with ease) a SIFU in D-2. Better steel, better lock then either of the knives mentionned.. Just in case you wanna go really big. I got over the fact that it's big in about 15 minutes.. now all the other knives seem small !

I don't have a Socom, but I do have a Military. If you decide to go with a Military, don't make the same mistake I did. I ordered the plain edge version, and reget it every day. I performs beautifully, but I really should have done the legendary Spydie serrations.

One clarification on Bart's excellent write-up: The newer Militarys do have the special pivot, so you can compensate for wear over time. This feature was one the main reasons I purchased a Military.

The Military is pretty ugly to my eyes, but tough as nails. If you want a knife to abuse daily, the Military is a great. I use it for my nastiest camp chores. It's one heck of a beater blade.

Bart student makes some good points, most of which I agree with. Just one more thing in favour of the military - the G10 handles don't scar up or get dinged as much as the aluminium handles of the Socom Elite, especially if you drop it (sooner or later, happens to all frequently used knives).

HEY!!!! How many of you have played with the SOCOM elite. The newer model has much better ergonomics, and I wouldn't trade it for a Sebenza.
