I plan on doing a final run of my version of the old Herters Improved Bowie. I will only be accepting orders until December 31st, then it is going to be discontinued. This model was featured in the November 2012 Tactical Knives Magazine, in the Kitchen Cutlery column by Steven Dick.

Here are the specs:

9 3/4" overall
5" blade of either 3/32" or 1/8" thick blade of O1 steel.
$185 + $8 shipping in the USA

Deliveries would start in late January

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... This is one of my absolute favorite JK creations.

Split the difference and go with 3/32". Feels just right on mine.

There is always the layaway plan, just like Kmart (get it, K mart, sometimes I crack myself up)

Wow,JK Mart awesome!
I'd get a Proud Supporter Knife if I went the layaway route though,I really hate missing out on it.

I`m serious about the layaway.

One more way to buy a knife I can't afford, actually it does work week that way, is much less painful, it's the waiting that kills me .;)

Now I gotta look and see what ya got available

Herter's used to sell a gunstock stain they called Walnut French Red, it was very close to what Winchester used as a stain color on pre-64 guns, it gave very nice, rich look, even to plain grained walnut, and had just a hint of red. I did a few Gunstocks with that stain and always liked the results, I think Brownells sells a similar product today. The second pic you show on the OP reminds me of walnut stained with that. I doubt that Herter's had their handles stained. Is this JK shown stained? John, how thick is that Original Herter's Improved Bowie blade you have? Do you have copper rivets? Wouldn't a comparison review of a new JK Improved Bowie vs an original Herter's be interesting? When you say this pattern is being discontinued, does that means Forever, even if someone orders one as a custom? Have you ever done mirror polish? What is the first knive your going to make in a stainless steel? What kind of steel were the Herters bowie made with? I'm just full of questions, sorry.
