I'm not sure where to start...I've coveted one of these since Scott H. posted a pic of his back in 2006.

It's an early one...how early I'm not sure 1967/68, I think. Has on right side, two line inverted BUCK U.S.A., hard fiber spacers, SS guard and pommel and a pinned pommel w/ hole.:D

Some people should not be allowed to own(to reproduce) anything related to knives/guns, etc. I don't know who or when this was done but maybe it was for my benefit.:) It may not have been availble for me if left in it's original finish.

This is the knife before....

This is the way it is after I stripped the paint off. The previous owner/idiot sandpapered the blade, guard and pommel...not bad but still.:barf:

So tomorrow my treasure is off to see the wizard(Leroy) so he can work his magic.

I wanted a 124 user...not sure this is going to be a user...have to decide.

The hunt is fun.:D Preston

Hi Preston,

Very cool find! Now complete your story, where and how you found it and what did you pay? Leroy will get it to like new condition, But, now I want to know what are the spacers made from (white Teflon, hard fiber, micarta)?
jb4570

jb4570, thanks, the spacers are hard fiber(I think).

I paid $100.00 to a vendor, deals in knives, at the Tanner gun show. He had a later three liner, full tang, with black micarta scales for $150.00 that I looked and and considered.

Told him that I wanted one for a user and wasn't going to pay 150. He then said that he just got another one that had been used in Viet Nam(weren't they all:() and painted black.

I asked to see it, saw the two line tang stamp, it had spacer between the guard and handle, blade that looked like it was all there and most importantly just felt really good in my hand.

Ask if he'd take $90.00, he said no so I forked over the hundred and it's mine.:D Preston

BTW, I did buy another 112 three liner, two pin, no nail nick in very good condition for $10.00, a 20mm cycling round for $5.00 and some .308 match ammo for $20.00 a box. P

Preston, That looks like a 1967 model to me based on the position of the hole . If so, there were only 3-500 made back then . For more info. you can look it up in the June 2003 newsletter, the article is by Joe Houser . Good find and photos . DM

Yes, David, thanks for the info on Joe's article in the newsletter.

That one in the bottom right photo appears to be like mine. Preston

Hi Guys,
FYI
Joe H. did another 122/124 artical in the DEC 2006 news letter, it covers all the years issued (no photo's:(). That was a very nice find and a very good price. Please post some photo's when it get back from Leroy, I have one very similar that could use a face lift:)
jb4570

To get it in shape will take a lot of work or send it to Leroy. I bought a Nighthawk Tanto that was painted and the blade came brushed so I cannot do anything with it. It looks neat because you never see one without a black blade.

Great score! I miss my 124 but I just can't bring myself to pay $150+ for a used knife I payed $60 for brand new. Does anyone know why Buck discontinued the 124?

Can anyone say for certain what year Buck discontinued the 124 . I believe this was stated in another thread 1-2yrs. ago . I know there are exceptions with the LE's . Seems like mid to late 90's . Thanks DM

David, Buck discontiuned the 124 in 1997.

Best,
Haebbie

Thanks, Hawkeye5, there is something special about the 124.:)

Sorta like the 118, 112, the 116, then there's the 120 and the 103 and the;)....well you get the picture.

I've got it and the 1st version 112 packed up and ready to go to the PO and on to Leroy. Now the wait...guess I'll start the search for...no, I've decided that I'm always searching:p. Preston

I think David's point was that Buck routinely brings back the 124 as an LE.
But those LE's are like 9/10ths size knives. I prefer the big honkers from the 70's personally.

Anyway, congrats to Preston on a very nice find. I'm guessing that if this knife goes off to Leroy it'll be a display knife and not the user he was looking for originally.

:) Flatlander1963, I'm struggling with that right now...don't know what I'll do...it does feel great in the hand.:) Preston

124's are Cool. Hope to see it after Leroy does his magic to it. That is a NICE vintage to have.

I've been coveting a micarta one, but so far when I see them, the price is more than I am willing to pay. For me, part of the fun is "the hunt" and getting them for "the right" price. It is EASY to add to the collection if money is of little concern.

I doubt that if you read my first post in this thread that you are accusing me of having little concern for money. :)

I paid $100.00 for this 124 and was a bit weak in the knees doing so.

Pictures will certainly follow its arrival back from the 'wizard'. Preston

You are RIGHT Preston. That was NOT my intent at all!

I was generally speaking of the prices I myself have been quoted, or see on ebay, when I see knives I would like to have.

Regards,
Peter

Thats nice knife find indeed,I'll bet it was painted flat black for a reason though,I doubt it was by an IDIOT,More than likely it went to some nasty places and did some nasty jobs at one time .

I believe the 124 was the best knife Buck ever made. Over the years I've acquired
32, mostly NIB. They have a certain 'live' feel in your hand, like a fine firearm.
