Sweet stamp. And how ironic that coming from Michigan it's a Dayton pattern not a Michigan pattern.
 
Well, now the pix are back. If there's a way to edit a post title, I don't know what it is.

I don't know how old this axe is; Buhl Sons lasted from 1873 into at least the 1960s. The fact that it's stamped "warranted" makes me think it's fairly old, because we've been saying "guaranteed" for quite some time. Also the chip on the toe puzzles me. It looks like the sort of fracture you get when you whack too hard with too-hard steel, but it stops in the middle. I'm wondering if this is an insert-steeled iron head and the steel took one side of the iron with it.

Thanks for your comments. I have so many plain vanilla axes that this is something of a landmark for me.
