Well it's time for me to expand. Working out of the basement has been great but I need the freedom of a free standing shop. I'm hoping to talk with the builder next week. This project will take time but it will be nice to have room to move around better, plus I need a couple more KMG's.:D

I just have a 12 x 20 building and a 12 x 16 as my shop overflow / yard building. Seems to work well for me. You will like the satilite shop my friend! Good to get that stuff away from the house.

Congrats! Get ready to learn a lot more stuff! I'm in the middle of getting a shop together myself and I've been learning a LOT. The most important thing I've learned is that it'll take 3 times as long as you think and cost twice as much as you planned :)

Good luck and post pics!

I going with a 12x24 pole building built by an Amish builder. They are booked up, so it will be done sometime in late August or Sept.

Congrats!! I want to build a shop, but got no room. :(

I am in the process of moving into my new house...the space thats all mine for my shop is nearly 24X24 and has shelving installed at least 12 outlets and 220 already wired up, so i am psyched beyond belief...i cant imagine being up and running again till mid summer, however. i still need to finish unpacking, installing a dishwasher and bathroom, and then design and build a wraparound workbench...

The best news of all is that my shop has its own door, which means I can vent out that and i can begin getting set up for forging!

Glad to hear that you are getting a new shop Scott. It will be nice to have a good place to work, set up the way you want it.

Matt, I am. They are only doing the building construction. I'll be doing the inside finishing work and I'll hire an electrican for the electrical work.

That's great Scott! The fire department won't let you use their hall? It's right across the street :D!
:D No but now it will be my turn to make the noise outside. Twenty one years of that fire alarm has really been something to contend with.:jerkit:

I know my IQ wouldn't melt ice, but I can offer one piece of advice. When you talk to the electrician, think of your ideal number of power outlets, and then at least double it. And make sure each one has at least 2 points.

You won't be sorry!

And don't forget lighting. I recommend twice as many flourescents as you were originally planning. If you are painting the interior make it eggshell or semi gloss white for maximum reflection and durability. As far as outlets, even three times as many double gang outlets still will not be enough and make them bench height.
