I've been wanting to try one ever since seeing Butch Sheely make it look easy. It ain't. Took me three times to get everything to stick. But it stuck. Wrought iron with 15n20 bit for edge...

Thanks for commenting fellas... I've been doing some punched eye hawks, but there is something about this style that has always spoke to me. I need to make one for myself.....

Love the belt axe shape and that's my kinda haft. Great stuff, congrats.

Regards

Robin

Geez, thats a great looking hawk. What youve done with the haft and leather is perfect.

Please tell us about the fabrication and you choice of materials. Your hawk is amazing.

Thanks again for the nice compliments.

I mispoke in my original post.. I have two of these in the works and this one is mild steel and 15n20. The next one will be wrought iron and some antique shear steel as the bit.

The haft is hickory stained with leather dye.. the wrap is cow rawhide with sinew lacing... also stained with leather dye. The wrapping below the eye is corroding brass wire that I will continue to allow to corrode until it gets where I want it. Deer antler bead. And then some brass tacks. I'm putting together some pine pitch/spirit mix for a varnish.

Thanks again... It's funny, I'm wondering what to call this now... it is a belt axe shape with traditional tomahawk drift and haft. Does anybody know anything about the historical context of such a combination? There is no doubt a tomahawk handle is better for leverage and swinging speed for battle.... but I never thought they felt right for woodwork. I suppose there is something to be said for combining the two when on long campaigns....

Congradulations! There is something about this style that speaks to a person isnt there. It Speaks of simpler times and the way it use to be :) It aint easy the first few times but after a while you'll knock them out without a second thought
