The wife showed me this video and I have to say it freaked me out a little, I'd never seen a Black Bear be so persistent before.

Anyway seeing as I'm unable to carry a firearm and as pepper spray can be unreliable in rain and strong winds I decided to bite the bullet and get a Cold Steel Bushman. I'd hate to fight a Bear with a knife but if I had to I'd sooner it be with 6' of strong wood separating me from the Bear.

Snicker had to get in on the pic !

The girls had a great time as usual !

This is how Snicker ended up at the end of our hike !

always love your posts, especially the pics of the girls.

Good luck w the bears. Hopefully its never needed!

Thanks for the video. I showed it to my son to demonstrate what it looks like when you are the hunted. Its not all growling and snapping. Steady, non stop aggression is scary!

Wow! That would be unnerving for sure. Didn't really show the aggressive lowered head and teeth popping that say's "this about to get real', but who knows what a bear is thinking. I lmao when he told the bear to "stay". Maybe 'sit or roll over' would have worked better. LOL

Cold Steel Bushman against a bear? Guess it's better than a sharp stick or a rock. :D

Yeah totally, definitely not something I'd ever want to try but if god was on your side and you managed to get a decent jab or two in then it might be enough to deter it.
Wolves are also becoming a problem targeting dogs over here so that is one more reason to carry something like the Bushman.

Ya got me thinking about Bushman5 with the title to this thread Pit. kinda miss his posts.

I've always liked the concept of the CS Bushman but it's bigger than I'd want to carry on a belt and being in my pack would defeat the defensive use purpose.

I'd like to see 'em come out with a scaled down version with a 4" blade.

I have had a full grown male black bear exhibit this behavior to me. It followed me out onto a long dock. I went to the end and dove under the water and swam underwater to the next dock over. I came up underneath the next dock, and hid under the dock. That bear was shot later that day by the neighbor.

I had another younger smaller bear try to climb into the old Toyota FJ40 we were off roading in. Let me tell you, you realize how slow window's are to roll up manually when that happens. That one followed us for more than a mile! But the behavior was different. More curious, inquisitive, less aggressive.

Hey pitdog, why not also carry a can of bear spray? It might be needed on a dry, non-windy day.

Don't know if you saw this back when, but it might bear another look: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/canoeist-stabs-bear-to-death-in-ontario-1.596038

Bears are a concern, but I think I'd be more worried about cougars (and not the good kind) where you live.

BTW, his knife was a Buck 119.

Doc

I do have some Bear spray Doc, probably don't carry it as often as I should. The Bushman was as a back up or when very windy/rainy ( as it often is here).

With you 100% on this Pit. My last trip up to the Boreal had bear sightings that morning, were I was going. The wife and I have heard conservation officers firing off bangers by our camp site before. I could care less about the nay sayers or poo pooers anymore. Better to have something and not use it, than to need something and not have it.

Brother if you fight a bear off with that Bushman and NOT take pics you're going to get guff for it. :D I have never purchased a Bushman but always in the back of my mind want to. One day I will do it.

I just picked one up. Bigger than I expected...I like the new sheath.
Without a gun, is def better than nothing.

Interesting link about the bear attack. I always thought you were supposed to play dead with a grizzly and fight back against a black bear. That almost made it sound like you should fight back no matter what. Anybody know for sure?

No bears around here but I did almost step on a rattle snake this evening while out checking my garden. Wish I would have had a Bushman on a long pole then.

Jim

Def. fight back against the black bear. Or try to intimidate it.

Videos like that make me very happy I'm able to carry a firearm everywhere with me in the woods.
