Finally bought a Peanut!

I have a few Case knives in my collection, but one I never considered is the venerable Peanut. When I used to buy knives I liked lots of blades and a fairly big handle. Since getting interested in knives again because of my Boy Scouts I bought a Benchmade and a few Spyderco's but wasn't thinking about traditional patterns until I found this forum. I kept seeing the Peanut pop up as one of members' favorite patterns, so I took a look.

I'm an "affordable" guy, (ok, so I'm cheap :D) so I wasn't looking specifically at Case because I've paid a bit more for them in the past than I was looking to spend now. When browsing I kept stumbling on Case of course, and saw their recent BSA series in Zytel. The price was good, so I snagged a Peanut for ~30 bucks, and I can't wait to get it!

Way to go!!

However, I must warn you at this point that you are abut to experience a conflict of emotions and a test of convictions.

Your first reaction upon unboxing the peanut may well be "Holly crap, it's sooo day-um tiny!" and you will wonder what kind of mistake you have made. You will wonder if the little thing will be of any use to you at all, and you may well be tempted to toss it in your sock drawer.

Don't do that!

Admire it with great care, making sure the half stops don't bushwack you, and the thin blades bite you. Fondle it, caress it, speak lovingly to it when nobody is around. Then drop it in your pocket and leave your regular edc home, and go about your day. I repeat the part of leaving your regular edc home. Peanuts are jealous little things, and don't like to share edc duties. As you go about your day, your pocket will feel unusually light. That's okay, the little 'nut is still in there, hiding until needed. When needed, you will be surprised at how well the knife goes through plastic blister packages, twine/rope, cardboard boxes, apple slices, and whatever you have to cut in the course of a typical day.

After a few days, it will start becoming part of you, and the two of you will bond. You will in time, become a peanut fan, and a member of the faithful.
:D

Congrats Zippofan!

The Peanut is still one of the better bang-for-the-buck Case knives. You'll be pleasantly surprised with it and how often you turn to it for everyday tasks. It really is a capable little knife.

You sure are a charmer Carl! It's a good thing you don't sell snake oil! ;)

All kidding aside; I have a damascus peanut that is the one I carried when I was in Europe a few years ago. It did everything I asked of it and kept me out of trouble too!

It still gets a place in my pocket, now and then, although I haven't forsaken all my other knives ... yet.

Thanks guys! I think it might have been one of your stories Carl that gave me the little push over the 'edge', so to speak.
I need to take a bunch of pics of my knives, they'll join all my wristwatch pics that I post on another forum.

I have some traditional Scout pattern knives on the way too, including a NOS Camillus that I found yesterday. My wife is gonna kill me...:D

Cheers,
Griff

He's right;):p

I swap it sometimes with my yella Mini Trapper or Alox Solo, but the darn little yella 'Nut keeps creeping back in my pocket:grumpy::D

No, she's not. As she goes to kill you for buying another knife, ask her how many pairs of shoes or purses she has?:D

Carl.
I overheard a lady stating that her husband does not need another knife. I intervened by asking the woman how many shoes she had at home. She stammered; "That's NOT FAIR!" Her husband smiled because he knew she had been had. ;)

Heh, it's not just the knives, it's the watches, Zippos and knives! I have to say she is a good sport though, as long as I don't get ridiculous, which I've been known to do at times. Since I've bought knives at a much slower pace than Zippos though most fly under the radar.

Useful items that go into my pockets are far easier to explain than those in plain view, like a new watch ;)

I just hope I can get the darn camera to cooperate. While I appreciate the ease of posting digital pics, I still miss film from time to time. Maybe cause I am getting old...

The goal is to buy enough knives, watches and zippos (along with flashlights, multitools and guns) that you reach a critical mass where Wifey can no longer distinguish them and she never knows that you have a new one. It takes time, but its worth the effort.

12 posts and not a single pic. Mr Bunny has a sad.

As soon as it comes I promise I'll shoot a pic or two.

I think tomorrow I better take pics of the knives I do have!

The Peanut really opened my eyes on the subject of having enough knife for the task at hand and I felt it really encouraged ( and challenged ) me to replace substance with skill and know how. It truely amazes me on how many task such a small knife can handle and IMO it is the ant of the knife world.

I guess that's one way of putting it. Looking back at all the older guys that were my mentors, they all had that precise way of doing things. Like looking at something very carefully before jumping in. Like watching my old friend Andy do such a neat job field dressing a deer with a Buck 303 cadet. It's a perverse pleasure using a small sharp knife to neatly do a job.

Congrats on your Peanut purchase, you'll be surprised at what you can do with it!

My Peanut just arrived! I knew it would be small, but I was surprised compared to some of my other knives. I know that size doesn't always matter though. Hopefully I'll get a chance to take some pics tomorrow, too dark for natural light now.

I really like the new BSA style scales, I wasn't sure if I would but they have a good utilitarian look to them. The blade inscription, "Prepared for Life" is a bonus.
