Part 1
Well the bug finally bit me and I bought a Manix and a Sharpmaker. And a few days later in an almost self-induced hypnotic state I bought a Calypso Jr.. I've long admired Spyderco knives and have been familiar with them for a long time, but for some reason I never bought one. Well a few months ago a saw a picture of the Manix. That knife caught my eye; it wasn’t a typical spyderco, at least what I thought was typical. So I got a little more interested in Syderco and noticed the Military was very popular. Then I decided it was time to buy one of the high end Syderco knives. I just couldn’t resist the look of the Manix, and also the lock back. It may not be as sexy or innovative as some other locks but its solid and tried and true. I was looking for a large folder for EDC and if needed could be used for survival type tasks. The Calypso Jr had also caught my eye and I thought with it being discontinued I should buy one. I figured this knife could replace the Manix when it would not be possible to have a large folder for EDC.

Part 2
I received the Manix the other day. First impression - big solid and thin, just what I was looking for. I then looked a little closer and found a few flaws that I thought I should ask some advice on before sending the knife back. I wasted a lot of time last year sending a knife back only to find out the same “problems” were just manufacturing tolerance and nothing was wrong with the knife. So are these just manufacturing tolerances or do I send the knife back – you tell me.

1.) One of the scales is slightly misaligned. Not really bad but you can see it.

2.) The screws on the pivot seem to be stripped on the clip side. Not a big concern but I’m a little hesitant to try and loosen up the pivot.

3.) The knife isn’t as smooth when opening it as I thought it would be. And I’ve only been able to get it to open once by flicking it. I would like to loosen the pivot but I’m worried about stripping the screws out totally. It’s not gritty just seems tight.

4.) When the blade is closed it’s not centered in the knife.

I just wonder if all of the above adds up to being slightly out of the normal tolerance range. The knife seems to function properly. With all the minor problems I still love the knife and I'm hooked on spydies.

Thanks for the help.

hmm, i wouldn'd worry about point 3) and 4), that's normal and will work out by itself or is not harmful/bad.

however, things like stripped screws and a misaligned handle-scale, mentioned in 1) and 2) would be reason enough for me to send it back in for replacement or fix-up.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

Loosening pivot won't necessarily make your Manix any easier to flick open. The heavy lock spring is what provides the detent.
