I didn't think I'd do it, but I finally broke down and bought myself a non-traditional style knife. I guess if I don't like it, I can give it to one of my younger friends who really like this type.

Here's the description:
This is a brand new 295 BO-B Tempest ASAP Knife made by the custom shop!. This knife has Buck Custom Stamp on the front of the blade and the BOS ATS-34 stamped on the back. Its handle is a grey aluminum skeleton style with clip. It covered by the Buck Lifetime Warranty.

Are they any good? Let me know if I made a mistake.
It was a little less than $49 delivered. or :thumbdn:

Yes, you made a mistake...you didn't post pics!!! :grumpy:

I've never heard of it, and the Buck web site is unviewable. Post a couple of pics. ;)

And some more info would be welcome...blade length, locking mechanism, your impressions, etc... :D

I don't have it yet, so the best I can do is some stock photos.
The blade length is 3 1/4", closed length is 4 1/2".

Plum,

I have one just like it (154cm though) in my pocket at this moment. I really like this knife and think the blade shape and design is one of the best available. The assisted mechinism is not fast but I'm only looking for ease of one hand opening. I sometimes try to open it with it still locked.

I would be happy to see a G-10 handle option added to the model. I also have the Sirus in ATS-34 but I tucked it away. The Tempest is one of my favorite users.

You did good on the price. I hope you enjoy it.

So

I recognize the picture background. That guy is a good seller.

Glad to hear that. It's the first time I've bought from him.

What's the difference in the 154CM and the Bos ATS-34 steel?

The ASAP knives are tough, and you got a great price! Mine all open super fast too!
154CM is the USA version of ATS-34 basically. Pretty close to the same steel, and you wont notice a difference during use or sharpening. I have both and love them!
Enjoy using it!

>154CM is the USA version of ATS-34<

Does that mean that the ATS-34 isn't USA steel?

It can be made here, but if advertised as such, a royalty must be paid to the copyright/trademark owner... ;)

And you can bet that Paul Bos gets a good bit of royalty, too (and deservedly so)... :)

ATS-34 was developed/made by Hitachi.
"USA" steel?...given this global economy crap, who knows. Hitachi has steel plants in the US.

Thanks Jim (is this Jim that "Will Hunt 4 Food"? I think the PostFallsIdaho gig is your new Witness Protection screen name am I right?).

I was just corressponding with a BBF about the diff between 154CM and ATS-34. In that exchange of messages, I'd forgotten that they were similar except for, what I believe to be, trademark ownership (money) to claim ATS-34. There are many links that discuss this if ya Google the two designations.

Anyway, Plumberdv, to answer the question in your first post, if ya made a mistake...yep...actually, two...

1> El Pollo Trax mextioned already about the pic. But ya kind of covered that.
However, when you get the knife in your mitts, I would like to see a pic of the "custom shop" tang stamp.

2> Yeah, that knife blows...you should send it to me. I will pay your postage. Just an offer to help ya keep from recalling what a bum deal ya got ;)
My two 298GY ATS-34 Sirus knives could use the company along with the 298GY 154CM I'm thinking of picking up this week. (first I have to convince myself that I "need" it as opposed to "want" it).

I got my first 298GY from a Pack Rat and liked it so much I got his other one just in case I lost the first. Figured they were gtting scarce and I really like mine as a user. One of my all time favorite EDC knives.

Took out the torx head until I found where I like it to open just right for me. Then I dropped some LocTite blue onto the threads and counted back the number of screw turns to where that spot was. Love it.

Be advised not to take that puppy apart. I have been dying of curiousity to do so myself...but have heard they're a real bitch to put back together.

Sirusly, good deal Plumber dude...

..."but have heard"???...Weren't you the guy who took his apart and had to send it back to Buck to have it put back together??? :D

What the heck does NEED have to do with anything! :) With me it's all about WANT.

Seriously guys, thanks for taking the time to reply. I will take some pictures of the real mccoy when I get it and post them here. I'm curious about the custom shop part.

The other name is under surveillance :D (I also can't log into it for???)

Ats34/154CM, close enough, its all good ;) I wonder where the aluminum and springs come from for the handles and ASAP parts :)
