Finally breaking in my BK9...porn inside

Yesterday was the first day above freezing we have had in a while, so I jumped at the opportunity to finally use my BK9 and see what all the fuss was about. Full disclosure- my goal was to snap this blade in half; I wanted to see what the breaking point was in real use, not chopping a concrete block putting it in a vice and snapping it. I also decided to put it in a head-to-head chop off with my Fiskars X7, I will post the results of that in another thread. Long story short, this knife is unbelievable! I pounded it as hard as I possibly could and it never flinched! I chopped and batoned until I couldn't lift my arm, and there wasn't a single chip or roll in the blade, and it still cut paper easily. Now onto the porn!

Poised and ready for a showdown!

A little warm up to get a feel for her

Moving onto something a bit bigger, but still went through it like nothing

Now that we are warmed up, lets see if we can get through a fallen tree! This was a lot of fun!! Huge chips were flying everywhere!

Ok, she chops. But can she baton without snapping? Lets start with a 3" log first and see what happens..

It only took 3 whacks to blast through logs those size. But lets see what happens when she goes up against a monster!

I was hitting the baton as hard as I possibly could to see if she would snap. I got about 15 degrees of blade deflection and got a little worried....

But in the end, this was all that was left of that beast

After all that, still made fuzz sticks with ease

So all in all, I think I am in love! When I go backpacking this spring, I think a BK9, folding saw, and a folder/sak are all that I will need. I have a garage full of 4-5" fixed blades that will never be used again!

Good post man, it's a hell of a knife. I've only chopped with mine a few times, but have batonned quite a bit, and it still shaves hair.

Cool pics,
I am curious in the results of your chop off.

Awesome pictures and write-up. I'd be super nervous about that blade deflection too, but hey it ended up fine hahaha.

Great pictures... I'm not one to use a knife to baton wood, actually never have, but it breezed right through that stuff, and the blade still looks very good.
The picture of the blade in the wood bent, made me cringe a little though

That just shows how great the heat treat is on these; the blade bends rather than break, and then springs right back to straight.

You and me both! I would never try to baton something that size, but I wanted to see what this blade could take.
