Finally broke down and went with contact lenses.

Went to the eye doc today and instead of glasses I decided to try contacts. They're not as hard to get used to as I imagined they'd be. Only gripe I have is I'm near sighted so I can't see close up and have to use reading glasses. That wouldn't be too bad cept my vision doesn't clear up real good till about 4 feet. I can barely make out the stuff on my monitor. Had to crank up the size of the font to giant, lol!
The ones I'm using are a trial set. The doc said if they're not right or if they give me any problems we'll try a different script. I sure hope he can come up with something better than this! Sure is nice not having to wear glasses! :D

Someone in my family who wears progressive lenses also trades off with "bifocal" contacts and says they work really well.

I also wonder if you could wear drugstore 'cheaters' to pick up the slack.

Actually I think that the glasses work better for somethings and the contacts for others, but both are good I hear.

I'll admit, if it weren't for vanity, I'd wear glasses a lot more often:o. I'm scared of unknown and known LASIK side effects, otherwise I'd get ti done.

As a mischievious college student, I have found contacts to be fairly indespensible, mostly because they don't fog up when you're running, but also because they give better peripheral vision, are not blinded by rain/sprinklers, and are less likely to fall off during physical activities.

They're a real disaster if you get something in your eye, though, or have to go up against dust and wind. And try not to get maced. :p

ditto for what dunhausen says.
I'm also a college student, active, etc.
another major plus for me is being able to take off my sunglasses, and not have to put on a different pair of glasses.
some cautions:
be sure to take them out before sleeping- even a nap.
don't rub your eyes, contacts have a habit of rolling up, and hiding somewhere behind your eye, and it'll take 10 minutes to find it and remove.
if you're going to be out late, take them out for an hour or two midday whenever you have a chance, so that your eyes get some rest.
and, always keep some contact solution & a spare case available- whether that means in your bag, pockets, car, etc. it'll only take one unexpected night somewhere or general issue with your eyes- even as small as some dust in them- for you to understand why this makes life a lot happier.

I have astigmatism (and am near sighted). They have finally come out with contacts that are good enough for me to see well with- actually better than with my glasses. I was SOOOO happy!

Then I found out about needing the reading glasses- 1 pair for at work, 1 for in the "throne room" and one to carry around when I was out or to keep in the car, but hey- they're cheap at Wahlgreens or Walmart (3 for $15 on sale) or wherever.

Oh, yeah- then I needed some sunglasses and of course the optometrist warned me away from cheap ones- this more than made up for how cheap the reading glasses were (and after a lifetime of never being able to wear "cool" shades I could easily go nuts here- whatever you do, don't try on a pair of Maui Jim's).

Now before my contacts, I always bought glasses with progressive lenses and that came with clip-on sunglasses and carried the clip-ons in my shirt pocket. I was good at putting them on & off with one hand- no muss, no fuss. But, now I'm free from all that, right?

So now, I don't have to wear glasses anymore- I just have to carry reading glasses and sunglasses both! And unlike my clip-ons, these won't fit or stay in my pocket. Oh yeah, don't forget the extra case and solution for emergencies (and a pair of glasses in the car, just in case).

The real deal breaker for me was that when things get too small or too close for the progressives in my glasses, I just look over the top (or take them off) and I can see really well up close or for tiny work. With the contacts I'm just out of luck if I need to see closer or smaller than my reading glasses would handle, and this seemed to come up alot.

Anyway, much as I liked the contacts, I just couldn't deal- but at least now I really appreciate my glasses!

I switched to contacts myself about a year ago, and no going back to glasses for me! I was pretty tired of cleaning them, and how much they got in the way all the time. Also, I remember getting hit in the face with a soccer ball, and spending a good 15 min trying to bend the frame back to perfection. Oh, and where I work, you have to move through blast freezers--glasses would fog up something fierce every time I return to room temp, and I'm not one for rubbing spit on them :D

Hey Neighbor, join the club. I turned forty a "few" years ago and whammo...glasses time. No biggy, had Oakley turn me out some prescription sunglasses in the Half Jacket XL design and I still look passable. Night time I like contacts but like you I gotta do the readers. Crap. Nothing says you are old more then readers.

Well, Old Guys Rule.

Contacts during the day bug me cuz if sweat gets in my eye it seems worse. Such is where we live in this Swedish Sauna of the South. Been terrible lately, I am out in the field all day long, little to no AC all day long.Investigations and Inspections 8 hrs a day.
Shoot me. :)

!

When I got to that special age, the fine print, tiny super close work, e.g. examining a blade's edge is what put me back on glasses. I take the glasses off or lift them and peer under them. Still am thinking about trying contacts again for the general stuff.

Just got contacts last week myself.

Superior in every way for my astigmatism.

Last night I did notice some weird effects from the black lights in a club- you know how a gin and tonic turns blue? The contacts tended to turn blue... No biggie.

Get thee to a doctor and investigate Lasix, the latest generation equipment is so stunningly effective as to make contacts hopelessly out of date.

if pro atheletes are doing it, risking MULTI million dollar carreers because of the advantages, its worth it.

It's really not that much of a risk when you can afford to get the top national doctor to perform the surgery.

For us Joe Schmoe's with finite budge allotments, well, first off, you'll be at least three grande in the hole to get it from a good doctor. Heaven help you if you choose to get it for a bargain. :p

I won't get lasec because it screws with your night vision... and that would pretty much kill me.
