I CANT WAIT!!! my wife is looking at me like a freakin loon. but i don't care.:D i Wanted that Variable speed moter so bad i could taste it but i settled on the 1.5 with the step pulleys . the VFD would have put me over my limit and this way i can order a good selection of belts. oh well I'm done now just wanted to share with people that would understand my addiction..... hello my name is Jon and i am a (ameature) knife maker.:D

hahah good try :D
ive only made a coupla little fixed blades up till now. and doing it all by hand gives me a real respect for those who made knives in the old days with out power tools. im getting ready to order an A$$ load of belts and such any one know a good brand? it gets kinda confusing with each company calling there belts somthing diffrent. well im off to study the search function for good belts.

go to TruGrit and order Norton Norzons or blue Klnigspors for your heavies. I ordered some of the new orange Norton Blaze belts and they are pretty aggressive, but i like the 60's better than the 36's. By the way.....with the current setup, I think you might be able to just order the controller and not have to get a new motor if and when you want to go the variabl;e spped route with your new toy. They are using AC VS motors and controllers now....is your motor a Leeson?

is your motor a Leeson?
i have no idea:foot: its the 1.5 HP one that sells on beaumont's sight:D
i am realy reveling in my ignorance here give me a mass casulity situation any day. much easier to understand than moters:D

PS thanks for the belt and grit info i was wondering if i should pick up 36 grit or not. i still gonna do most of my rough profiling on my bench grinder cause i have access to about 10 or 20 8 in grinding wheels. a buddy of mine works at a shop where they use 10 IN SOLID wheels that they throw out when they wear down to 8 in. win win situation for me. now im gonna have to order some REAL metal. so far i have just used used saw steel to make kitchen knives and a little nessumuck skinner.

Ha! Sure you are! Wait till you get that KMG fired up. You'll never want to fight with that old bench grinder again. When you see how much more control you get and how much heat doesn't build up using a nice fresh 60 grit belt, you'll be hooked on profiling on the KMG.

you may very well be correct sir having never used a belt grinder i didn't know there was that much of a difference. i watched the on site video's and they were really moving the metal. This is just so exciting i cant wait to get started.:D

Congrats on the KMG purchase, you will enjoy using it.

Hey Doc,
Don't listen to Kerry....heck, he is getting advise and coaching from one of the finest slipjoint makers in the world.....

Kerry Just kidding ya.....

Doc start with the lowest speed pully on that grinder. and grind bare-handed.
gives you 2 things....control and , yeas sometimes a well-burned finger and thumb...

Enjoy!

I am going to take the plundge next week also. Can someone give me the base dimensions of the KMG. I want to get a stand ready. Thanks....Jim

actually, keep the wheels for rough profiling. Bill Moran did that. Belts are kinda pricey and I discovered that 72 inch belts don't last a whole lot longer than 48's or 42's.

yeah thats what i was thinking to. just bought 5 each of 60,120,200,and 400 belts plus a shop roll never in my life did i think i was gonna drop a 100.00 for sand paper:D

congrats! Doc. what are the surface speeds per minute with the step pulleys? I hope you don't mind me giving you a little sage advice. first, throw those old wheels just as far as you can. There are many problems with them. First, they are silicon carbide. In the past, many blade grinders in Sheffield england, and Solingen Germany, died a very early death. It was very unusually for them to see their 40th birth day. They died of Cutlers disease. We know it now as Silicosis. Misspelled I'm sure. The silicon carbide the wheels are made of are worse than black lung. Stay away from it. Secondly they can compact micro silicon crystals into the blade steel, causing stress risers during heat treat. They heat the steel way out of proportion of the amount of metal your using. They are very slow compared to good belts. And the worst thing about them, being that they are used. They have a bad habit of blowing up. it is bad enough when a belt blows. They can slap the hell out of you. When a vertified grinding wheel blows, it is like a granade going off in your face. I remember OSHA films showing a body repair man grinding slothing when one blew. It went thru his fill face shield, thru the skull, and into the brain. Killing him instantly. I have two friends that have had them blow up on them. One looks like a stroke victim with his hand and arm drawn up. It took out the artery in his neck. The other was hit in the main artery in the inside of the leg. He almost bled out before they found him, He is still in a wheel chair three years later. He suffered brain damage from the loss of blood. I treat grinding wheels, and cut off wheels with a lot more respect now. Use the belts. They are much further along on the technological scale. Safer, cooler, faster, and much more controllable. Far be it for me to turn down ANY advice from someone who has been in the profession for over 30 years! sage or otherwise. the belt speeds if i remember correctly with the step pulleys are 3600, 1700, and 800. don't quote me on this i will have to look it back up. i was not aware that embedded silicone crystals would create sporadic heat treatment and thank you for this knowledge. as for exploding wheels i can imagine they would cause serious injury. On a side note i spent 4 years at Ft Hood as a medic in first Cav its a shame i didn't know about your shop then i would have loved to have swung by. thanks again to everyone who has been supportive. i have learned so much from this sight and God willing i will learn more.

Doc:

I purchased a KMG-10 with 2hp motor and variable speed about a year ago. Sure do love it. I had some questions on wiring and setup too. I just called Rob Frink and he spent about 15 minutes on the phone with me and explained everything, in layman's terms even. So if ya have any questions just give Rob a call and he'll get ya up and running in no time. Enjoy the grinder, it is built like a tank.
