Well I am excited! This week was a big milestone in my knifemaking! I purchased and installed a 1800s Peter Wright anvil in my new shop! Its 200 pounds and rings just like a bell! I pulled out the forge that I hadnt used since i got my oven, got it blasting, and put some of that 1/4"X1" 1084 from Mace to work!

I have quite a learning curve to catch up on from my stock removal experience, but so far, its coming pretty naturally. I forged out a 5" blade faster than I could have cut and ground the same, using less material and little waste!

I am going to do a whole lot of reading and plan to really crank it up forging-wise...im also interested in some of the artistic merits that you simply cannot do with stock removal such as twisted steel lanyard hooks, forged integral bevels, etc etc.....

Either way, i am excited and just thought i would throw it out there. Im currently taking pics and hope to put up some pics of the new shop very soon. Im going to need some serious ventilation that i have not figured out yet!

TikTock,

Is that anvil that was on local craigslist about a week ago? If so, I'm glad you got it.

It sure was the one on craigslist. i stole it pretty early. i guess the guy got offers from all over the NE, haha!

I was expecting a pretty pitted and rusted anvil, but i got it home, took a wire brush to the face and it had smooth as glass, flat steel about 1mm below the surface. I could spend an afternoon and have it shiny and new if i wanted!

Cool Now you can have twice the fun.I love forging but i dont get enough time to do it,so i got a grinder for those quick shop visits.
Have fun forging

:)

Ill try to take a few pics this afternoon if I can!

Im excited more to be able to really control the design morse than with stock removal. I never felt good having to use wide stock to simply drop the handle...seems i'll be wasting much less steel this way.
