Finally getting a Becker

So after years of procrastinating, I finally ordered me a Becker BK 7 (don't know why it took me so long). While I sit here waiting for my new toy to arrive in the next few days, I have couple of questions. Assuming I like the knife as much as I think I will, I may get a 2nd to mod and customize. Would grinding down the ramp on the spine or grinding a choil void Ka-Bar's warranty? I figured if I do end up doing the mods mentioned above, I'd use files rather than a power grinder of some sort to prevent my dumb@$$ from possibly ruining the heat treat but was curious if it would affect the warranty. Also will the pouch on the BK 7's (and 9 for that matter) sheath accommodate an Altoids can? Also any suggestions for a good grip tape that can stand up to some moderate use? I've used Wilson wrap on other knives but it always seems to come undone faster than I care for. I was thinking of trying some hockey stick tape or baseball bat tape but would also like to hear any suggestions. I do plan on getting some micarta scales and upgrading the sheath to leather or kydex eventually.

Thanks for any suggestions, advice or opinions in advance guys.

Congrats. Never owned a 7, but I'm sure it will serve you well. I really don't know about the warranty part of it, tbh. I've ground on a few. Just go slow, and dip it in water before it gets too hot. Although some think the grivory is slick, it was made like that to avoid hot spots. You'd be surprised how well the grip is on it. There's a video floating around somewhere, of a guy oiling up his hand, then repeatedly stabbing it into a tree. Yes, an Altoid tin fits in the sheath. It does on my BK9 sheath anywhos.

Thanks a ton Warrior. I have gotten a chance a fondle a stock Beckers and I'll admit the grivory handles weren't as slick as I expected but then again my hands weren't sweaty at the time either. Definitely want to upgrade to the micarta scales at some point.

No problem man, glad to have you here. Stick around, and enjoy the madness that is Becker. Like 91bravo says, it won't be your last, haha.

Congrats :)
I also just recently got my first Becker... just like you, a BK7.
Loving it so far.
The standard handle feels not slippery at all to me. And very very ergonomic. Micarta or wood does look much sexier though.Just start using it like it is, you might be surprised.

Thanks a million guys.

I'm already trying to decide on my next Becker. Couldn't choose between the BK 7 and 9 I ended up flipping a coin which is how I ended up buying the 7. But now I'm torn between a BK9 or a 16 or 17. Too many cool knives, not enough damn $.

I'm not a money machine either, but, you'll still end up with a bunch, haha. The 9 is my all time favorite blade. I use it often:

Zero need for tape or micarta in my experience, it’s all about the shape! That said, I might get micarta at some point because it looks cool!

Get a 9...thank us later!

I'm getting the micarta purely for looks myself as well. Plus I already have quite a few black-on-black knives as is and I don't want to strip the coating off until it gets really worn down so the tan micarta will make a nice contrast to my collection.

I won't lie, while I'm super happy to be getting the 7, part of me also kinda wishes I went with BK9 simply because I love big knives. Infact most of my knives would be considered large so it would fit right in. That being said I'm in desperate need of a good smaller blade too. The smallest fixed blade i have is an Ontario USAF Pilot survival knife and while I love that knife, it doesn't do fine cutting and slicing very well.

Same here. I use most of my knives for wood processing, so I tend to gravitate to the larger blades.

I'll put another vote in for at least trying out the stock grivory before you do anything different.

I chopped sapplings (.5 - 2in diameter red alder) down for an hour yesterday in my backyard. It rained the entire time, and I didn't use gloves (did use a lanyard though).

Never had my hand slip, and didn't get a blister. Which makes for a grand total of 0 blisters I've ever had from a Becker knife.

Congrats on your BK7. I doubt it will be your last :).

Don't forget a BK 5 and a bk2. Lol

It's funny I always forget about the 5 but I always loved the looks of that one. Reminds me or a Persian style dagger. That's another one I've had my eye on for awhile. I have a few ideas in my head for customizations.

I got to handle a BK2 along with a few others at a local knife shop this past week. Just not sold on the weight of that knife for it's size but I know it has it's own myriad of fans. Don't get me wrong, i love overbuilt knives and the 2 definitely feels tank proof and it has a certain charm about it I can't quite put my finger on. Just not used to knives that thick with a blade under 9 or so inches. I'll probably pick one up eventually but either the BK5,9 or 16 (or maybe another BK7) will be my next Becker me thinks. Didn't realize the 17 was discontinued, bummer :(

The BK7 was my gateway Becker as well. I went with the G10 scales and the factory sheath has served me well.

My first Becker was a BK7...Camillus, though. My life was pretty normal back then - I had the 7, and some time later bought a 9. Fast forward many years, and I found this forum. Here I had my eyes opened to rest of the lineup; and, soon after, I bought a BK16...that's when the obsession set in.

Beware of the BK16. It looks innocent enough; but it's got magical powers (or something). It starts with one, but then come the ideas of modifying it... so you'll need another. (And another)
