I have been learning knifemaking, intensively, over the last two months. I have read almost everything that I came across for years. I have been using 3 bench grinders, (1 set up as a chop off tool, 1 set up with angle grinding heads to do the profiling, and 1 set up as a polisher) a cheapo 1X30 and a Ryobi 4X36. I sold some knives in my collection, in the forums (thanks, guys) and I have ordered my grinder.

I was considering the Grizzly 2X72. (I did not sell a lot of knives) I had ordered it. I continued to read old posts here, and ran across "Chiro75"s post with a link to Coote Grinders. I spoke with Mr. Coote today. I have cancelled my order with Grizzly and ordered one from Mr. Coote.

I am getting the 2X72 with the 6 in wheel (I haven't learned hollow grinding yet). I am getting the lower knife stand and the pully system. I already have a motor (1hp). With shipping and the pullys, it is only 5.00 more that I was paying for the Grizzly!. Mr Coote was great to talk to. I can't wait to set it up!!!!! :D :D :D

I just recently bought a coote with a 10" wheel. Its my first belt grinder. I love it, runs smooth and quiet, grinds fast and finishes nicely. I wish I had bought one a long time ago!

I think you will find that the 6" wheel is way to small. If there is any way at all you could swing a 10" wheel instead of the 6" i think you will be alot better off.
I bought mine with an 8" and now that i have a 10" i have the 8" collecting dust for the last 3 years. put the money from the 6" towards a 10".

Good luck and your gonna love the Coote, its a much better choice the the Grizzley.

Good choice David !
I have a coote too... I Y like it !
I bought a 8 and 10" wheel but I use only the 10"
(exept for very small knives and folder blades)

when I bought my bader I was going to omit the 8 inch wheel all together , as I thought I don't do hollow grinds , since getting the Bader all I have been doing is hollow grinds , just wish I had popped for the 10 inch wheel.

Or, if you have just a few extra $$, you can have him set the grinder up to take either the 8, or 10" wheel.
Like Michael said, a 6" is not good for that much, unless you're going to be doing very small blades.

Not criticizing you here, but don't want to see you get a grinder to find you can't do much with it, as far as hollow grinding goes.

a 6" wheel is really only well suited for dagger where you want deep, narrow grinds and a sharp centerline.

Mine has a 10". Haven't used it much, but after reading everything here it seemed like the way to go. FWIW, I took Mike's advice and asked Norm about settin it up for 8" and 10" wheels, and he hemmed and hawed so much I told him to forget it, so maybe he's not as willing to do this now as he used to?

I ordered the 8 inch today. I am excited to get it. There was not much difference between 8 and 10 in price, but the 8 was almost over budget. I had to get the pulleys and I got the low knife rest. I can't wait to get that baby in and set it up!!!!

Thanks for all of the input, guys.

Congrats, Coote is a good machine. I got the one with the 8" wheel and love it. I don't do many hollow grinds, but you can with an 8-10" wheel. It's not a KMG, but it is a good grinder and even if you get a KMG latter you'll still have a use for the Coote. Once you can afford it get the small wheel set-up, they come in handy for certain jobs, though it does take a minet to change over, its faster than sanding drums!

I got the small wheel attachment and a 5/8" sleeve right off the bat and I use it a ton!
