I finally got a benchmade 710 last week and all I can say is that I am now a huge fan of D2 tool steel. I was skeptical about it at first reading on how it wasn't stainless and seeing somebody's on youtube that got stained but I learned that with a little proper care it is one of my top favorite steels. I like it far better than 154 CM,VG-10, 8Cr13MoV,440 C, 1095, etc. I do have one concern though and that is my axis lock is sort of loose. I can push it down further on one side tan the other in the closed position and it wobbles a bit if I take two fingers and move it up and down. Is a loose axis lock something to worry about? Is it normal? Btw, I bought it from Grand Prarie Knives, those guys are more than helpful and curtious to their customers.

How does it hold a edge? I really want to buy a benchmade 710 but I justification to spend it.

Yeah man, I've got a Nimravus in D2 that I really love. It's a fantastic steel that can take a pretty good pounding. Doing some hiking we were harvesting water from vines, and I only had the Nimmie on me, so I used it to cut through 2 inch vines...really beat the crap out of it, and it didn't seem to notice. Edge wasn't great afterwards, but still very serviceable.

Just got one last month and love it. It is the only knife I have that I did not get bored with a few days later.

D2 is great stuff. I noticed a little bit of rust after about a week of carry around the thumbstud. It was easy enough to remove with rag and a little Brasso metal polish. I then put a light coat of mineral oil on the blade.

If you think the lock feels loose, or not quite right you could always give Benchmade a call. My understanding is if there's a problem, they will fix it for free. I'd be more worried if the Axis was loose in the open/locked position.

Is the bluebox worth it or can I find something cheaper at the hardware store to tighten the pivot?

the 710 is a great knife. Benchmade puts a fine satin finish on the 710 which helps guard aginst rust. I have a bead blasted s30v knife that will rust a lot easier then the benchmade 710 in a fine satin d2. My only gripe about the 710 is the g10 feels kinda cheesy. If they went to a nicer g10 like on my Millie it would be at the top of the edc foodchain

Toally agree, almost feels like FRN.

I feel the opposite. I love polished and textured G-10 and wish my Millie had it too.
