I'm so freaking happy right now I can hardly type. I've been looking for a Burgundy Micarta 106 for a long time to go with my early 70s Pathfinder, but I didn't want to pay the $200+ price that most of them sell for. This "used" one popped up on eBay and I won it for $77.75. When it arrived, the "scratches" on the blade were actually just dirt that washed off with soap and water. Underneath the dirt, was a 99% near mint axe! :D

Sheath had a few interior cuts, but I covered those with a little black leather dye and the sheath looks good as new. Even the belt loop was crisp and in new condition.

Anyway, I was blown away by the quality of this thing when I pulled it out of the box. It looks and feels like a custom axe and the sheath is heavy duty and very well made.

Buck just continues to amaze me with the quality and value for their products - past and current.

That's a very nice Burgundy Micarta 106 Axe you won... I like the 106, did they make them with a white melamine or white micarta handle??? :) I have a stag handle one that I got from my son and his wife that they found at a swap meet.... It's sweet! ! ! ! :D:D

Well, I called the brat. He says yeah he has it, but the handles are Corian--he broke the original handle scales at some point and made new ones with some scrap.

So is the steel 440-C in this axe?

And what's the story on the rivet in the middle of the sheath? I've seen Burgundy axe sheaths with and without a rivet. Here's one without:

Great find!
440 c on the blade material 1973 Burgandy "Red" micarta.
Several sheaths were mfg. for the 106,different sticthing, placement of 106
and Buck stamped into the leather and snaps on the earlier one liner 106's.
I have pics somewhere ....just need to find them.

Someone with more or corrected info might chime in.

Thanks for the information, EEE!

I was thinking that Burgundy Micarta production stopped around 1969, but you mentioned 1973. Can you or someone else give me a quick timeline on these axes? Looking for the years of manufacture for Phenolic handle axes and Burgundy, Black, and Woodgrain Micarta axes.

Nice find on the 106, do you have a kalinga to match?

Thanks honesttom. Actually, I purchased the axe to match my 34 year old Pathfinder. Better late than never. :D I wanted Burgundy Micarta so it would match the burgundy Micarta spacers on my knife. They sure make a great set! :)

Nobody has a 106 timeline?

It's not like I'm asking for the exact date that my axe was made. Although...:D

TAH,
I have a spreadsheet that I would be happy to send to your email. In the meantime, let me see if I can remember how to attach it to a post here...
Did the ax come in a box and if so, could you tell me what paperwork was inside? I'm trying to nail down some details that will help with dates and such and the paperwork really helps.

Hi Joe,

Unfortunately, there was no box. I'll send you an email for the spreadsheet.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, I think you strike a cord w/ all of us. As, we too feel like we've scored the game winning touch down when we finally get a peice in our hands that we've been after for some time. Good hunting, friend. DM
