I got it in the mail today, popped the DVD in, and went to town on my Gerber Paraframe and Ace Hardware knife to get a feel before I touch my Benchmade and Kershaw.

Both are now shaving sharp, I think the Gerber is even sharper than my Benchmade because it shaved my leg hair with ease, arm hair with barely pushing at all.

I just need to work on getting it even because I think spots around the tip aren't near as sharp, I must have missed them. It's also hard to get the right side done as well as the left, but that will also come with time. I can see why people hate combo edges though, now I wish I got my 710 as a plain edge because it's a pain trying to miss the serrations and only getting the plain edge.

I'll keep messing around with the Gerber though and try to get it evened out. I thought I'd totally screw the blade up my first time but other than being a bit "uneven" in sharpness, it's not bad.

As soon as I get to the point of not semi-ruining the blades :)

Now my left arm is bald and a patch of my leg hair is missing :(

jf, I'd suggest getting a goof magnifying glass now to get a real close look at those edges. Under magnification, you'll see any spots you've missed.

My friends all joke about me having mange on my lower arms! :D But when they need their knives sharpened, guess who they bring them to? ;)

Is that a special kind of magnifying glass ?

;)

Good idea, I'll have to look around and see if I can find any. I can see some "shiny" spots on the blade in certain lighting, if I remember correctly, that means that part of the blade is rolled over or something. Means something bad I think.

Why yes, yes it is! :D No one's told you about it yet? It's kinda like your title..."FInally got a Sharpmaker"

Stupid spellcheck...........

I see nothing wrong with my title

:D

I need some more crappy knives to work on.

Its called the Red Neck Mange. I always have it. People get used to it, and actually notice when you have been on a sharpening kick.

Radio has a great magnifier for 10$ . IT says it goes from 100-60X. I would also suggest you work with the Sharpie trick (Mark entire edge with a black sharpie to see where you are missing). Finally, I would also suggest to pick up the UF rods when you can spare the money.

Now........go sharpen everything you can find!:D

Ahh yes, I forgot about the marker trick. Great idea, I read about that months ago before I even thought about buying. Thanks.

If you're getting one side sharper than the other, you may be making a small wire-edge (i used to do that a lot).

Carefully, feel for a bur on the "sharper" side and remove it with a couple gentle swipes on the stone.

wire-edge feels sharpe and can even cut softer things but will roll on something stronger.

Yeah it seems like the right side never gets hit properly because I have a hard time holding it at the right angle for that side... I tried sharpening a junky swiss army type knife and it didn't really get sharper, so I guess I do suck. How long do you think it'll be until I get decent?
