I have been toting SAK's here lately as I have been whittlin', tinkerin', and opening up quite a few beers;). I guess they are an old enough pattern to be traditional, but it isn't the same as a nice slippie with multiple blades and bone scales.

I bought a new SAK just the other day and it hasn't left my pocket until yesterday. I was opening up a box at work and my knife slipped and fell point first into concrete:eek:. It bent and bluted the tip, I just know that wouldn't have happened with a sheepsfoot. So I started off today with a Boker Barlow, then switched to a Case Peanut for lunch, and I am now carrying a Case medium stockman in Amber Bone for the rest of todays chores. Feels good to have a solid slippy in my pocket again.

BTW: After I bent the blade on my Wenger, I switched it for an No.7 Opinel ASAP.

I am truly sorry to learn about what happened to your SAK. Such occurances have been known to mess up my whole day. Is it possible that the knife could be salvaged?

I'm not so sure that a sheep's foot blade necesarily would have escaped damage. In addition, there is at least a reasonable chance that at least one of a traditional pocket knife's bone scales might have been cracked.

So, I am glad that you are enjoying your reacquaintance with your "traditionals". However, I profoundly regret the circumstances that led to that reaquaintance.:(

Thanks for the kind words. It did ruin my day for about three minutes, but life is too short to be bothered by something that you cannot change.

You are right about the scales possibly chipping if they were made of bone, but I don't think that would have happened. It was not a long fall and it was smooth cement, but the possibility still exists. I know it would not have caused much damage to the sheepsfoot (my blade of choice for the task), it hit the blade just right to bend it.

It is still usable, but I had to bend the blade back to normal so I could close it, the SAK looks ugly now and it just isn't the same, especially since I whittle with that blade. My Case stockman feels so much more solid and sturdy than my SAK does.

A few years before my dad passed away, when he was just about 70, he fumbled his grip on his old peanut he'd been carrying since just before the war. It fell on a cement sidewalk and put a good crack in the off side scale.

Bone handles and drops on concrete, don't get on well together.

Bent or broken blades are one thing. :thumbdn:

But I don't trust a boy without scabs on his knees and/or elbows, and I don't trust a guy whose knife doesn't have some nicks and dings from use. :)

My condolences on the bent blade. Look on the bright side, it could have been worse. I dropped a Queen Teardrop Jack on concrete once and lost about 1/8 of an inch off the tip.

That certainly does sound worse:eek:.
