We'll see how this works. I may still make an iron leg, but I'll be surprised if the maple one doesn't work.

The thing is it has to be stowable in the shed and pull-outable for use. Those wheels don't take any weight till I tip the thing over and drag it by the handle.

It's hard to tell from the pics, is it at a suitable height for sitting at with a stool? Or how do you plan on using this?

The log is 25" high (leavings from a city tree crew), and the vice rises maybe 7" above that. So it's a little below my ideal anvil height (36" knuckles to ground).

I plan to drive hatchet drifts between its jaws, and grip knife stock with it for upsetting in the middle to make a sort of integral bolster. And for holding hammers peen up to act as bottom fullers. Largely as a substitute for a hardy hole, really: my little anvil has only a pritchel, and the block of steel I use to spare the little anvil has no holes at all.

That should work. I need to play more with my forge and anvil also. I have so much to learn and so little time it seems to do all that I want.

Amen to that. I still have to connect up my new blower, then I think I've got all my technical problems solved. I have to do a little masonry repair around the house, then I hope to get a few hatchets and knives out. And a couple of bicks for socketing spears and walking-stick heads.
