I ordered the Polar Bear Forge kit and built the basic grinder back in September. I was given a 2 hp DC motor, which ended up not working. So I finally managed to get hold of a new one at a decent price (man, who knew DC motors are that expensive!), so I finally got the grinder up and running last night!!! No more 2 x 42!!! Just for fun, I ground out a blank that I had for a new order. Man, I can't believe how much of a difference it makes! It took me about 1/2 the time, and I was able to get a much flatter blade than with the 2 x 42 (isn't variable speed great!!!).

The way I designed the grinder, I wanted to add a disc to the left. I'm gad I did - it works like a charm!!! Now all I'm waiting for is the Forward-Brake-Reverse kit for my speed controller)

Anyhow, here are a few pics of the grinder

A couple of reasons - firstly, I would not be able to have a disc sander. Secondly, there isn't enough metal on the upright to securely hold the motor with mounting screws (the holes in the upright is for a differnt frame motor, and the face of my motor is smaller, if that makes any sense).

That looks great! The disc sander idea worked out awesome!

Care to elaborate a little, please Mr Meske? It's 1/4 angle with a ceramic plate JB Welded onto it...

You missed the "wink" . He was alluding to your bullet proof platen :)

Sorry for the bad joke. I was trying to be funny and sometimes end up only amusing myself. I am impressed with your grinder and am green with jealousy over it.

I mean a platen AND a contact wheel right there at your finger tips, ohh and did I mention a surface planer/grinder/sander thingamajiggy?

Now go to sleep...!!!! :)

No problem at all Paul! As i said, sleep depravity...

Hmmm a surface grinder attachment... How would that work? Gonna have to noodle on that one for a while... Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for sharing, Sean. It looks like it wouldn't be too hard to make something like that (obviously not quite as fancy). I'll have to tinker a bit.
