Hi all, as some of you remember, I asked a lot of questions on here and finally ordered a manix 2 lw several weeks ago. I live outside the u.s., so getting things delivered can be a bit dicey. Well, it ended up in customs but I was finally able to get it out today! I drove an hour to the customs office this morning, and they told me I had to go to te bank and pay a fee before they could release my package. The fee was 72 colones. That's about 14 cents u.s.! True story. Whatever, important thing is I have my knife!

Brief first impressions.
-Knife is bigger than I thought. I was afraid it would be too small and I almost got the xl. Glad I didn't. The size seems about perfect.
-blade came bizarrely sharp! Treetopping, face shaving sharp. Seriously. Stupid sharp.
-I bought the knife over other models because it looked like it had good ergos and geometry. I'm not the least disappointed! Knife is very comfortable in multiple grips. The only complaint I have is I think the edges of the handle should be a bit more rounded. It's a bit "blocky" feeling, but that's minor.
-I was a bit worried the knife would not handle "heavy use". That is not my impression at all after handling the knife. Actually feels quite solid. Ultimately time will tell, but I am pleasantly surprised. It's a lot more tough feeling than I expected.
-I didn't really like the translucent blue handle in videos but it's much better looking in real life than I expected.

Basically, I ordered this knife for some specific reasons, and decided I was willing to accept certain perceived "shortcomings". My first impression is that the "shortcomings" I was worried about seem to be either non existent or much more minor than I was prepared for. My initial impression of the knife is overwhelmingly positive. I'll start chopping up some fish this week and let y'all know how she holds up.

Lance, I'm glad you finally received it and like it, can't wait for the fishing report.......:thumbup::thumbup:

Glad you got it and sure hope it works well for you. Even without liners, the knife is very sturdy and feels plenty tough. CTS-BD1 is supposed to have good rust resistance too.

Damn, I guess I should have said it wasn't sharp and I would've gotten more responses! ;-).

I think we are anxious to hear your take on it... after your enthusiasm with your first Spydie...

EDIT: (I mean more than just your initial thoughts...)

I have been on the road today or you would have gotten at least one response sooner. ;)

Glad you like the knife and that you didn't have to mortgage the house to bribe it out of customs. Enjoy!

Yeah man, I figured you'd be chiming in. The blue's really not that bad is it? I'm kind of digging it. Ergos are great on the manix aren't they?! I kind of new it was going to fit my hand just right after watching videos and hearing feedback from you and many others. Thanks for the advice. I think it was a good choice.

Nice, glade to hear your already liking it. I still need a manix in my spydie collection plus about a dozen others :D ergos are really hard to beat. I wil probably get the g10 manix

Not that bad at all. In fact, it is currently my favorite of the 3 that I have.

I just bought my 3rd from a gent on this forum (thanks JackalopeSTICKER!) a black/black Manix 2 with the S30V blade. Very nice knife and I already like it a lot. But the weight difference between it and the blue is remarkably different. As measured on my small scale, 4.8 oz for the black, 2.6 oz. for the blue (not sure what the official weights are, but that is what I get). Spyderco should consider milling the liner in it like they do the XL (much bigger, but only 5.0 oz.). OTOH, I don't even notice the blue when clipped into my pocket, which is where I find it quite a bit. It, and my Ritter mini-grip, seem to be getting the most carrying time right now.

Yeah, not bad at all. ;)

I know thus is kinda old, but I always enjoy your posts surfinggringo and wanted to chime in. First, the system of law down there in Costa Rica is amusing to say the least. Your 72 colones fee is classic. But I also just got a Manix lightweight (black version) and am blown away as well. Far surpasses my expectations at first impression. If you see this, I'd love to hear how the bd1 has held up (edge retention/corrosion resistance) in your usage.

Hey buddy, glad you got one and that you are enjoying it. I never really fell in love with mine. It just never fit my hand just right. That's a very subjective thing and I understand the love that some have for it. It's a nice knife. I ended up getting a pm2 and like it much better.

As far as the steel goes, I was actually pretty impressed with the bd1. People act like it can't hold an edge, but I think it performs pretty well. Much better than my dragonfly salt! I'd put it somewhere in between h1 and s30v in edge retention. I took it out in the kayak a couple of times and had a couple of tiny corrosion spots show up on the edge after HOURS in the salt water, but it did pretty darn well compared to most other stainless steels!

Overall it's a very good knife. If the ergos fit your hands and your uses then its a great knife! Enjoy!
