I was very happy to find my first Sebenza 21 (small) delivered when I got home today.
Even after I ordered it, I kept asking myself "how can any pocket knife be worth $330.." The constant accolades and glowing reviews convinced me to pull the trigger, but deep down I didn't really think any production knife could truely warrant that much cash.
That was until I held it... I don't remember the last time that I was this impressed with a knife. Might have been when I got my first Busse fixed blade, but maybe not even then..
Chris thought of everything - I don't even know where to start...
First, it is surprisingly lightweight - even for a knife this size, but very stout and rock solid feeling at the same time. The jimping is extremely comfortable yet secure. The titanium is beveled and smooth, yet micro-textured in a way that provides great grip. The blade has a smooth rounding to the top for comfort when needing to apply pressure to the blade.
The knife is small and goes unnoticed in the pocket, yet provides more than enough blade to perform most any task I'll need from a pocket knife. The detent is extremely secure so I know there will be no accidental openings, yet the knife is still easy to engage with one hand.
The opening pivot is as smooth as silk, and this thing locks up like a bank vault. This knife just oozes confidence and screams to be used.
The clip is just perfect - and this is many times a big sticking point for me. This knife is easy to put in my pocket yet isn't going anywhere until I decide to pull it out. The lanyard is unobtrusive, stays out of the way, yet there if I need it and provides a very efficient way to take it out of my pocket.
But the most unbelieveable thing to me about this knife is how it fits in my hand. The only way I can describe it, is it's as if Chris had me hold a soft piece of wax like a knife, and took the mold to custom fit a knife to my hand. It's just an amazing feel, especially for such a compact knife.
Needless to say I'm impressed and obviously pretty happy about my purchase. Yes, it is still a lot of money for a knife, but I am now fully convinced it is worth the asking price.
Is there anything I would change? Yes, but nothing of any real consequence. I would change the blue stud and back spacer to a matt finish SS - which I will have done. Actually, the one thing my wife didn't like about it is the "jewel looking" thumb stud, and this coming from a female..
Also regarding the thumbstud, with the perfection in ergonomics elsewhere, why the pointy thumbstud? It actually provides a little too much pressure on the thumb in one tiny area when opening which is slightly uncomfortable to me. So I have to ask - has anyone "modded" their thumbstud to remove the tiny rounded point, or is there an after-market thumb stud to be had?
Anyway, any knife maker that comes this close to true perfection I have to tip my hat to. Awesome knife Chris!
One interesting thing to note - after all the talk about the great Sebenza, I knew I would never
rolleyes
spend the money on one, so I decided to get the "poor man's" Sebenza - the Spyderco Sage 2 Ti - for half the price. So I got it, and it was nice and all, but I had to keep convincing myself that I liked it because it was such a popular knife. In the end, and even at half the cost, I couldn't convince myself it was worth the $150 I paid for it and sold it. At more than twice the cost, I'll have no problem keeping this one...
Here's a couple of pics from my new Sebby! Oh and by the way, be careful. This thing bites!
