One of my grails is finally in my hands and I love it.

This thing is outstanding. On top of it being the exact model (8spine, bombproof) I was wanting.

This thing is also sterile. I never noticed until I got it in hand. Thanks PeteyTwoPointOne PeteyTwoPointOne for finally getting one of these in my hand.. and a rare one at that. I honestly couldn't imagine getting an HG55 from a more knowledgeable person on the matter. I think you may own the biggest collection of them (at least that I've seen).

Think I'm gonna pair this with my Red Rock Rifleworks MT-1 tomahawk.

A handsome combo if I do say so myself. 16546231204595755689788295586554.jpg20220607_122518.jpg20220607_122504.jpg20220607_122436.jpg

Wow... 🤔 the search forums feature here must still be having issues. i had to find the link using Google...but here's Jerry's post on the MO HG-55, including differences between these & the regular production version. 🤙

I almost bought that exact one off of the exchange. How does she compare to a boss jack or P&L Statment in your opinion?
It feels great. Don't have a Boss Jack (yet.. waiting for a no choil to surface) but next to a P&L it's a very similar knife. They kinda fill the same role of 5-5.5" fighting knife.

Key differences I see are in the handle shape. The P&L pommel is gonna be more of headache to get hammer fisted with because of the point. The HG55's pommel is flat. This would lend well to say.. pressing up against plate armor to put body weight behind a stab.

Other than that they both balance similarly close to the handle so they both feel very lively. They both have a swedge but I imagine the HG55 punctures a bit better based solely off blade shape. That being said.. I'm confident the P&L handles this job without any real hangups.

Chopping isn't something I'd look for in these. Seems like they were both invented to stab rather exclusively but they could be made into good slicers. As they sit neither would be impressing anyone well versed in sharpening either. Just kinda chubby behind the edge is all.

Speaking of sharpening. They should be fairly easy to get to a working edge even in the woods. More curve on the tip of the P&L but it shouldn't cause any trouble because they ground it in the traditional tanto way (smooth curve rather than two different angles on the American tanto)
The HG55 is gonna be the easier of the two because the blade sweeps less, BUT it will take way more metal to take off behind the edge to get the same edge retention or sharpness. Just an easier shape.

Overall I would feel good knowing I was packing either one. They are well thought out knives (especially love the jimping on the HG55 and the swedge on the P&L) for their intended purpose.

Keep in mind all of this is MY opinion. Other people might have different thoughts on the matter. If so feel free to elaborate on any detail mentioned.

Great looking stuff. Petey is a straight shooter.
I second this. Petey was a pleasure to do business with.

That is a handsome combo!! Congrats.
Thank you!
The Busse folks are some of the best on the knife-loving internet. I've met so many guys on here that I consider friends.

Congrats on the great score!
I agree. Since I've been collecting Busse I haven't met a more welcoming community in the knife world. CPK, BRK, and A handful of others are alright as well but here is my favorite knife place to be by far.
In this case, it's because the CBT stops well below the tip, & the tip is beefier. The MO HG-55's & some Custom Shop versions have them. 👍
Good to know. I noticed it's quite thick at the tip but couldn't figure out if I what exactly made it "bombproof" as well. I thought I was looking for a special grind like the penetrator tip or something.
Congrats on the killer score. They are really nice, especially in hand.
Surfsidemel
For real. This thing likes your hand in any position of hold. Kinda wish he'd put this same handle on a big chopper. I bet a new BB13 or Kukri with this would be fun.
Quite the pair.
Thank you sir. I have been looking for one of these to pair with this tomahawk for a while now. Not a whole lot of knives out there that look quite like these.

...wow, that hawk and the '55 look like they could've been separated at birth!

...thanks for the kind words, and although I have more 55's than I have hands to hold them, I don't hold the record for HG55's....not.....even......close.
They do don't they!? This knife is the first thing I thought of when I bought this tomahawk. I'm psyched to have one of these things in hand finally. Thanks again man.

To anyone reading this. If Petey is selling you might wanna hit him up. It was a good experience overall. Cool guy 😎

The Boss Jack, Grudge, Fudge and HG55 are some of my favorite designs

From a company that makes true combat blades, the HG55 may be the most "combat" blade they ever made, IMHO.

It's got a good size and it would handle everything from prying open a crate to silencing a sentry.

I agree it's a sublime design and would excel with thrust motions, tip leading, just as you said..

Another advantage to he bombproof tip that may not be all that apparent at first glance is, when it's forced between two things will give you a mechanical advantage like a wedge.

The pommel is great for light hammering or being hammered upon.
I know this firsthand, because several summers ago I used my HG55 to help demolish an old dutch barn I had.

Here's the tip of my most cherished 55, tigerhide with wall to wall large gauge CBT >>> the blade in my profile pic:

Now compare to my stripped MO 55...I knocked the shoulders back on my tip...

before stripping, after sharpening the secondary bevel on my WE, but before re-grinding the shoulders:

btw, I enjoy sharpening, it's a zen activity from my viewpoint...and this 55 was really enjoyable to grind into those CBT:
