Well pretty much since I started collecting I was always afraid to use my knives. Didn't want to damage them an whatnot. Well I've been puttin some of my knives and multitools to use at work in a car garage and now see that cleaning them and sharpening them isn't a bad thig. It takes a lot to damage the good steel that I have. So I've started carrying a lot of knives I haven't in a while. Anybody else ever been like that?

I don't buy a knife if I can't see myself carrying or using it. I regularly use my $200 ZT 0300 as a bottle opener.

I had every intention to use the knives but when it came around to it I was scared to damage my 200$ knife. But now I guess I realize that it's a waste of money to not use and I've got good steel that should be out to good use.

I can relate. I recently started carrying some of my safe queens. I get a lot more enjoyment from them. Should have done it a long time ago.

It took me about 5 years but I got over it too. Never felt better.

They're not like, ancient artifact knives found in some tomb, I'm sorry to let people know now and then but even a custom that cost $1500 now isn't going to cost anymore than maybe 3000 20 years from now..............
USE THEM
USE THEM
USE THEM
USE THEM

I was pretty much the same way until I bought my first Sebenza.
After that I figured if I'm gonna be spending good money on a knife I'm sure as hell gonna get my money's worth out of it.

I think the fact that they can be refurbished back to like new condition helped me along, and gave me the confedence to really put it to good use. Made it a lot easier that's for sure.

I was that way with the $100+ knives for a while. Did the same thing with other gear.

It always bothered me that something would just sit and not get used. Now I pretty much don't buy anything unless I plan to use it.
Now, if it sits too long without use, I will send it on to a new owner.

I was that same way with my paramilitary 2, i was so afraid of scratching it and losing its value. Then i thought to myself "are you really going to re-sell this knife?". And the answer is hell no, so i said screw it and started EDC'ing it. No regrets so far. If you buy a knife, carry it.

My Benchmade 42 is the only really expensive knife I own.. I'd EDC it all the way if laws allowed me to :(

I'm like that with any new knife i get, price doesn't matter.
For the first few days i only use it for really light cutting and stuff, but after that i usually get over it and use the knife normally.

The weird thing is though, if i get a swiss army knife, i'll beat the living daylights out of it, because victorinox is the only company that i've bought from that i've had no problems from. Some knives have some sentimental value to them, but then i think about it and if they wanted me to put it away and admire it, they would have bought a prettier knife haha.

I never had that issue because it took me so long to accept the fact that I was a collector. For a while every knife I bought was the one I was gonna carry 'from now on'. In short I was in denial. But it does mean that my primary enjoyment is from grabbing a new blade and cheerfully using it.

I used to refrain from using new knives. I now get the satisfaction of using them, not just storing them in a safe and fondling them every so often. Now, as soon as I get a new knife I throw the box out and immediately put it in my pocket. Even my custom knives get used the same as any of my others.

The way I look at it, unless you abuse your knives, they will likely outlast YOU. Even if you use them every day. So why not use them. After all, you can't take them with you.

I don't see the point of buying a knife NOT to use it. Sort of like buying a Ferrari and never driving it.

And I doubt that current production knives will increase in value so much that it would be worth it to leave them in pristine condition in a safe for your future generations to sell. Screw future generations, enjoy your stuff yourself.

I agree, use your knives! Myself, I don't like the feeling of owning too many knives. If I'm not willing to carry and use a knife on a regular basis, it's going to be traded or sold away.

In fact, I'm currently in the process of debating which knives I'm going to keep right now.

If you don't use it , someone else will. Might as well be you.
( Unless you want someone to find it in a drawer or box after you have passed on)

Then said person will look at your fine knife and say , " What a nice knife !. I wonder why the guy never used it ? It looks just like new !."
