I finally got my hands on a parcel of desert ironwood. I finally understand why people like it so much. It looks like its glowing from the inside.

I knocked out a scale for my RAM this afternoon. Enjoy.

Very nice looking. You should put some nice scales on a groove next! Lol I just got a groove so I guess I have it on my mind.

I looked at all your photos and I have to say you do some amazing work, just awesome !!!!

How long did it take and how hard was it to do?

I'm getting pretty fast at making RAM scales. I can make the non-lock side in less than an hour. The lock side takes more time-consuming hand work.

The basic step by step:

Cut out roughly rectangular blanks for both scales.

Trace the original onto the blank.

Rough out the profile on the spindle sander (or by hand sanding).

Stack them with the original and drill the mounting holes.

Countersink the mounting holes.

Finish the profiling.

For the lock side:
Drill the pivot hole and countersink.
Roughly drill out the lock hole.
Chisel and sand the hole to the proper profile (fit is crucial here).
Hand sand the lock divot.

Contour and sand the scales.

Add the clip divot.

Polish every last scratch out (1200 to 8000 grit depending on species).
