Finally got to do a little shooting

Several months back I started a thread here in which I requested information and recommendations on a first firearm. Many of you were kind enough to offer your comments and experiences, which I greatly appreciated.

Because other priorities have demanded my attention (and funds) for some time, I really have not been able to devote any time to pursuing my firearm interests (or blade interests, for that matter). (I am still hoping for a repeal of the child labor laws so that my offspring can start bringing home some bacon, rather than just eating it. :)) Anyway...

I finally got a chance to do a little shooting at a local firing range yesterday. A buddy and I took turns with a Glock 19 9mm and a Ruger GP-100 .357 magnum revolver (4" barrel). I enjoyed both, but I favored the revolver, perhaps due to its heavier weight and more comfortable grip. My accuracy (perhaps 'inaccuracy' is a better word :)) was roughly equal for both. I hope to get back to the range again soon and try out some different models (SIG, S&W revolver). Right now I see myself ending up with a revolver. Move over, Jerry Miculek. :D

Eric, sounds like a great time! My first pistol was a Ruger .22 revolver, my second revolver will be a Ruger .357 Magnum Blackhawk (single Action). It will also shoot 9mm. I'm getting it because it has less felt recoil then the other 9mm's I've shot, including the Glock 19. Plus 9mm is cheep.

Check out a 1911 pistol or two. I don't care for some of the modern pistols because they are mostly polymer. The Springfield XD being an exception. Though the SIG P226 Is rather nice. :)

I have one of these and it is a great gun. I was doing some one-handed shooting up in the mountains at about 20-25 yards. I set up four different boxes put a spent, small coleman propane tank on one, a metal canteen on another, a tin can i found up there on another, and the last item escapes me. Anyway, I fired one shot at each and hit each one. The gun is steady in the hand and shoots straight.

Your skills/accuracy will improve with time. Slow is fast, fast is smooth, smooth is accurate. Stay focused and stay safe.

Love the GP100.

3" model has a grip that fits my small hands better. hated to sell it when we moved to WNY.

take care,

Tom

I've yet to take my P-38/P1 out for a round of shooting and it's way overdue!!!! I have lusted for one of these guns ever since my old man hocked the one he was supposed to have given me, a real WW II Walther steel frame and all with the beautiful bluing that looked as if you could swim in it.:(
There may be better guns but this old Walther has been and no doubt always will be my favorite!!!!

Thanks Heber. My brother has a SIG P226 and speaks highly of it. I have not had a chance to shoot his yet (He is in Colorado) but that model is on my list to try.

Am going shooting tomorrow at 5:00pm. Will either rent the SIG P226 again or try another new 9mm. Tried an H&K USP Compact in .45 ACP. Didn't really like it so much. But I'm still going to give it another chance some day. Love the 1911's. :D

Do you have your next shooting trip planned? :)

S Brown, thangs for sharing your thoughts on the Blackhawk. I enjoyed the storie. Was going to get the gun tomorrow, but my car needs some tranny work so I have to wait for another paycheck or two. Stories of using the Blackhawk are nice to read while I wait for spair money to get mine. :)

Look into a Smith and Wesson 686 357 magnum 4" barrel revolver. This is one of the best shooting and strongest 357 mags I have ever shot.

What did you end up shooting, H? How did you like it?

I don't have another shooting trip planned, but hope to go as soon as I can arrange it (my windows of opportunity for that kind of thing are fleeting). A friend of mine has a number of different models (both semi-auto and revolver) and he offered to let me try some out the next time he goes. I'll keep you posted.

May I suggest trying a .44 Special or .45LC in one of Smith and Wesson's N frames? I believe that a big chunk of lead wobbling out at 775fps is pure joy!

I've shot the 6" barrell version many many times and it is definitely one of the best shooting guns out there.

I like revolvers as well. I carry a Taurus 445 .44 spcl., my wife a Ruger SP101 in 357. She is deadly, dude!

I'm not one to argue with the Duck. But I don't know jack about 357 mags :D

Revolver is nice and reliable. I'm all for stuff that works when you need it to.

Eric, We did lots of shooting Monday. Shot my two .22 pistols, a friends S&W Sigma 9mm and a few rentals. I rented a Springfield XD-9 4" then the Springfield 1911 GI model .45 ACP, and after that we did the H&K USP compact in .45 ACP. I also shot my friends Russian M44. We had a great time.

I work 7am to 3pm so I have lots of free time in the afternoons. So I normally go shooting at 5pm every Monday. My membership which includes free hand gun rentals is nice! Makes it cheep to go. Except ammo, but when we shoot mostly .22 it's really cheep. Go as often as you can and shoot as many guns as you can. I'm slowly making it through the ranges rental guns. Though I might stick with the basics for now (XD-9 and 1911). I get the best groupings with those guns.
