Finally looked at a Mini Barrage...

I seen the Barrage knives many times in pictures, and read about them here too. I liked the looks of the blade, but the handles left me somewhat unimpressed.
Thinking that there must be something to them, if they are popular enough to warrant a Custom program at BM, I figured they would be worth a look someday...

I ended up having the day off from work today, so I went to the local Pawn Shop to see what goodies they had in. They had three Benchmades.

A 551 Grip, a Mini Barrage, and an m390 full size Barrage. I knew by looking, I wasn't interested in the full size, because I tend to like my knives a little smaller, so I looked at the Mini.
I was actually impressed. I always thought the handles looked kinda funny with the grooves, but they are very comfortable. In fact I played with it for about 5 minutes. I'm not big on assisted knives, but found I really didn't mind it on this knife.

So now it seems I may be getting a Mini soon. They had this one priced decent, and I can always get them down on price, but it was a combo edge.

Also consider the Volli which is based on the Barrage and sized between the full and mini.

Thanks. I can't get use to the scales on the Volli though

That's been what's holding me back on the volli too

I do have a 586 though, love it.

The Mini Barrage is one of BM's favorite models of mine. To me, just the right size in a pocket clip knife. On my black bladed one, I've removed the assist, but left it there on the tanto. If you can track down one of the older Warn issues and snag the G10 scales, it makes a nice upgrade I feel over the plastic. But the solid plastic stock scales feel good in the hand too. Nice and sturdy.

It would be nice if they made all of them out of G-10. The plastic ones do feel fine though

I made the mistake of getting the mini barrage in combo edge but other than that they are really nice knives. They are also quite easy to de-assist, making so much more enjoyable.

I have only had one knife with serrations, and that was a Mini Grip. It was fine, but I too don't care for them. If the knife at the Pawn Shop would have been a plain edge, I probably would have gone back and bought it.
I had thought about buying it, and sending it in for a blade swap, but only if I could get it for $40-$50, and I doubt they will go that low. Probably closer to $65.

Heck, I found a new one with a plain edge and no coating for $99, so it wouldn't really be worth it.

The full sized M390 Barrage was the best knife there. The assisted opening it has is the best assisted opening in the business. The 581(large m390 barrage) and the 586(mini m390 Barrage)have been referred to as the Mercedes of knives in many pro reviews. My 581 is the best overall production folder Ive ever had. Hold out for the 586 if smaller is your thing it is just on a higher level than almost any Grip and worth the price
