I travel a lot. I feel naked without a knife. I usually have a 345 in my right pocket and a 501 in my left. But on a day that I drive to the airport I carry a 283 only. The plan is to leave it in my car or put it in my checked bag before I go to security. You can guess why I carry the cheap knife...

So it finally happened. I checked my bag and started walking to security and the 283 was still in my pocket. Old age is tough. My car was 40 minutes away in long term parking. I sadly left the little knife on a bench. I didn't want TSA to get it and I saw no reason to throw it in the trash. Someone on their way out found it, I hope. Ah well, I got it for about $12 on sale at Midway.

Yeah that is a pain in the butt when flying. It hurts !

When I fly to Alaska to visit family there I also go fishing, camping and tour the trails on UTV or a foot, like you I feel naked without a knife. And like you I’m not taking a good or expensive knife to have it confiscated by security. I did pack a Leatherman Wingman in my check bag and it made it through but still I want a KNIFE ! Lol, so now when I fly to Alaska or anywhere I just shop locally and buy a Buck knife to use while there. Then when I leave I gift it to family or friends. It works out good and it feels better knowing it was for someone I know and a memory they can keep with them.

What eats at me is when I see em on fleabay....."TSA lot for sale". So instead of disposing of them like they say they go to auction where people buy the barrels. Idk why it bothers me so much, I know it's our fault for forgetting to leave em at home but still.

I once had to leave a very nice Spanish automatic outside of a MAC (military air command) terminal in Spain..I was catching a flight back to the USA in the late 70's. I left it in plain sight so some other sailor would find it. If some vendor was smart they would sell prepaid padded envelopes for folks like us..A small chance of getting it back is better than none.

"Disposing" of them includes selling at auction to the highest bidder.

You think Customs destroys everything they grab coming into this country that the importer/exporter can't provide paperwork for and show that the taxes have been paid?

You DO?!?

(Guess again. They don't.)

Not even the faux/fake big name "designer" brands of handbags, shoes, clothing, faux/fake "Rolex" watches, fake CD's/DVD's/BluRay disks, and whatever fake knife ... are destroyed or shipped back to where they came from.
They sit in a warehouse for three, five, seven or eight years depending on what it is, and are then sold at auction.

Too bad it’s not like school was when I was a kid. Put it the top desk drawer get it back at the end of the day.

in middle school they went into a safe in the office. We had to wait til the end of the school year to claim them.

Of course that was only if you were stupid enough to get caught with it.

I also hate the TSA auctions and refuse to bid on them. I don’t know why they want us to know that anyway?

it is funny what some people get stuck with at the airport. Also very sad when you can see it’s a heirloom or collectible piece.

I went to visit my family in Berlin. I hand purchased a bunch of beautiful hand made wood pieces for a lady my uncle knew over there. Most of them were small and I wanted them safe so I carried them on. The centerpiece was a medium sized carved windmill which Germany is fairly famous for. It got confiscated at security because a thin metal rod ran up the center that the piece rotated on. I'm talking thin to the point where you could barely see it on the X-ray. That killed me to give that up. It wasn't the price, it wasn't really that expensive it's the fact that it was a one-of-a-kind carved piece...... Not knife related but Petty security-related.

Did you look on eBay for “TSA Windmill”?

I couldn’t believe it when my son got a “wings” sticker on his first airplane flight. They consider the old plastic wings with the safety pin a weapon.

Lol no. It wasn't TSA but the German equivalent. So I'm not really sure how it works over there. This happened years ago and my uncle actually told the lady what happened and how pissed I was and she made and shipped me another one. She said she wasn't going to charge me but I think my uncle paid for it. It was shipped international, "handle with Care" in amazing packaging......no way she foot the bill for all that but I eventually got it lol

A few years after 9/11 I was going to Belize for some fishing. They wouldn't let me carry on my fly reels because the line could be used as a weapon.
I saw a list of prohibited items once and "bullwhips" were listed. A buddy said, "I'd almost be willing to be on the plane, just to see them try to hijack it using a bullwhip."

I lost a 283 about a year ago.

Despite being in the middle of nowhere in a state where open carry is legal and it's common place to see guys with large fixed blades and guns on their belt the local county court house is so strict it makes TSA look fun.

I thought they were going to arrest me for having the little knife in my pocket. I had remembered to pull the Buck 112 off my belt but forgot about the other knife.

After a 10 minute lecture from the rent a cop security guard he finally told me to either surrender the weapon or he was placing me under arrest. I watched him put the knife in his pocket as I got on the elevator.

That made it even worse. Why can a unarmed mall cop have my knife but I can't? I called the sheriff's department the next day and complained and they said they would look into it. But you know how that goes
