Well I asked you gentlemen over tha last couple of months several questions about gear for my upcoming canoe trip. I leave friday and was not able to order the Ritter Grip I was wanting, but I finally figured out my packing list for knives and tools.

Benchmade D2 grip
Becker BK-7(on belt)
RAT-3 ( redundant I know but I dont leave home without it)
Becker Necker
Vic Farmer
SOG Powerlock( in sheath pocket of BK-7)
Glock Folding Shovel (on pack)
Microtech Socom Elite D2 ( attached in a pouch on my pack)
Spyderco Temperance ( in pack just in case)

I think these should cover my needs for the 4 days we will be out. Normally when hiking I would carry the large knife on my pack but there is a slight concern about getting tossed from the canoe and separated from my pack.
Thanks for all the help guys and I will bring pictures back.

5 of my wife's family members (1 useful )
Firestarters( waterproof matches, bic, tinderquik)
Tent ( columbia 2 man)
Sleeping bag
First Aid kit
Springfield XD .45 with 5 inch barrel
ammo
fishing gear
I packed 7 MRE's just in case. We are carrying food, and they think we are going to catch alot of fish.
Batteries for flashlights (123a)
I also threw in a small gerber hatchet
rain gear
extra clothing

Wow! Well, if it comes to it everyone will have a knife and then some :D Anyway, just make sure everyone is wearing PFDs. It might not hurt to lash the packs into the canoe if you are that worried about going over the side. I also note you are taking a 2 man tent for 6 people. Sleeping in shifts? (just kidding!) I'm guessing that one is for you. How many canoes will you have and where are you heading?

3 canoes. We are going to go down the red river from spanish fort to lake texhoma. The tent is for me and the other guy in my canoe. Depending on the river it might not take four days. I have made this particular trip 4 times before with my dad. I bought enough PFD's for everyone but 2 of them think they can swim so well they dont need them. The red river is normally pretty calm but it can be a beast when the water level is up. The packs are going to definitely be lashed to the canoe. I also made it a point that each canoe carry its own supplies in case we were to become separated or something along that line. Thanks for the ideas and suggestions guys.

I'd wear a PFD even if I was an olympic swimmer. It doesnt make a lot of sense not to. They arent that uncomfortable and can keep you from drowning even while unconscious. This reminds me of people who choose not to wear a seat belt. I never even notice I'm wearing one and Its the absolute first thing I do when i get in a vehicle. I've been in several car accidents and not once have I had any kind of injury except for a small cut on my head from a sharp piece of safety glass. Without the seat belt on I would have been thrown from the vehicle once and received at least one broken nose. Oh well, people are people...

What are you bringing in the way of water treatment/filtration? How about waterproof sacks for your stuff? Have you established a protocol that the other party members are willing to follow? I think you have the knife situation pretty well under control! Around here the waterways are surrounded by about a hundred feet of rotten wood, thicket, and brambles with plenty of insects. Deet can make your evenings quite a bit more comfortable and long pants and long sleeve shirts will keep you from getting all cut up while looking for dry firewood.

Have fun!

Hey jlfletcher83, there is a VERY good chance you will see us if you are on that stretch of the Red River from this coming Friday-Monday. We'll be in a Panther airboat hunting BIG Flatheads and Blues all weekend, so let me know what your floatilla will look like and we will stop and say hi. We'll even pitch ya a couple of big Flatties if you need/want them. The airboat is camo painted and will be flying the Texas flag off the back of the cage, you can't miss us!

I think you should consider bringing more knives. For example, there are no Barkies in that list. I dunno if you're gonna make it.

Tolly we will be in 3 canoes mine is green I dont know about the other 2. If we see your boat we will give you a holler, and I will apologize in advance for my dear wife's yankee family members.

No need to apologize for the Yanks, we're friendly to all kinds down here...well, almost:D

Hey, you dont have any Fällkniven knives either.
Get everyone to wear a PFD. Since its a river your main concern is not to loose gear so see to that. A person floating around in a river wearing a PFD will be picked up sometime anyway so there is no need for PSK and stuff. Just keep the clothes dry and an involuntary swim can be a fun memory in a year or two :)

If you are really well supplied on the monetary side you could get some knives like the Fallkniven U2, WM1 or F1 (or Bark River or any other good all purpose/survival/EDC knife) and have them engraved with the campers names and when they arrive at the first campsite they are given them with a swedish firesteel and then they have a nice thing to look back to in X years. "Do you remember when I got this knife, it was when Y turned the canoe over and ...."
That is of course if you have lots of money and want them to understand the need for good equipment :)

Good luck with the trip, though I am having a hard time understanding the need for a firearm. Fishing is best done with explosives you know :)
But then I am not from over there anyway.

I am not trying to speak for jlfletcher83, but I would imagine the firearm is for protection. I will be on the same stretch of river and I will be carrying these with me

The 20" barrled 870 12 gauge is for wild hog patrol as well as personal protection, the Marlin .22mag is for varmits, and the Kimber .45acp will be on my hip anytime I am off the boat walking around the woods.

Well, it is different worlds. I guess that over here we might soon need something against wild boars roaming around. 12 gauge slugs or something (semi) auto 7,62 FMJ, that can also be used against wolves around here :)
The wolves are not dangerous to people, they just eat the hunting dogs but the wild boar can be dangerous 24/7.
Good luck to you all on the river trip.

The Springfield XD is for personal protection and I am considering taking along my M1A as well. The Thackerville area along our route is somewhat dangerous and wild hogs ran rampant there when I was a kid. I have a cousin that is a deputy sheriff in cooke county and he said they run into the occasional meth lab. We loaded out everything today and this is going to be a very well equipped crew. I am looking forward to it. Thanks for all the hints guys.
