Finally Ordered an Edge Pro

After repeated struggles with my Sharpmaker, which is hardly adequate to me for any serious sharpening, I've finally broken down and purchased an Edge Pro. Not the standard one either. I found a set with Shapton Glass Stones. Only question is flattening. Is this done same as the normal Edge Pro stones (glass plate and silicon carbide)?

Of course... there's the waiting for the thing to arrive too...

I got advice that the glass and silicon wouldn't work well so I spent a few extra bucks or a diamond lapping place that Chef Knives to Go sells as well.
I got the EP with the Shapton glass as well. Love it!

I think you'll find that it's levels above the Sharpmaker. You'll be able to sharpen at any angle and it's soooo much quicker!

Good sharpening,
Dave

I would not use the silicon carbide with the glasstones. Use an atoma 140. Then you have a heavy hitter for when you need to move some metal.

Never thought of using it (the Atoma 140) to flatten other stones.

That's what I've come to believe after watching a fair number of reviews on the Edge Pro. It still took a little working up to considering the price and the fact my old Sharpmaker is the only sharper I've had until this point.

I got the EPA with the Chosera set from CKTG and I couldn't be more pleased with it.

I don't even touch my Sharpmaker anymore :(

Maybe its just me but the atoma 140 seems to aggressive for flattening the shapton stones from 1k on up to my final stone of 8k. I prefer the finish left by a dmt course (325 grit) dia-sharp over the atome on the finer grits. As long as you stay on top of flattening them it still makes for a perfectly flat epa stone in just a very short amount of time. The finer finish with the dmt seems to give me a little better feedback fresh off the flattening stone. But thats just me. Anyone else have the same experience?

I agree that it does seem to be rather aggressive for stone flattening. And there's also the price point to consider. The DMT course Dia-sharp can be had for roughly $40 with a bit of searching and the Atoma, well, about $105.
