I dont know why I put it off for so long but finally got around to ordering UF stones for my Sharpmaker. Wow, very impressed, should of done it a long time ago. Anyone who has Sharmaker and doesnt have UF,s I highly recomend them.

i prob did 70 strokes on the points of the brown stones,,and it just started to bring down the angle from the top of the edge of the blade, This is going to take a very long time,,prob hours..i might need the diamond rods,,i think,,,would they work better..i just cant justify 45 bucks plus shipping for a 45 dollar knife i paid $30 for.

The brown rods on the sharpmaker aren't that aggressive and while they work great on the lower alloy steels they really won't remove much metal very fast on the newer steels.

The Sharpmaker is best used to maintain sharp edges and do touch ups.

yup, those stones are really nice. most of the time i don't even use strops anymore i just stop at the ultra-fine stones.

you can wrap a piece of wet/dry sandpaper around the rods and secure it with tape or rubber bands. works well if you only have to reprofile 1-2 knives and that's it.

I noticed with the UF stones and the F for that matter that results seemed to depend on the steel for me. VG10 would get razor sharp on the UF. S30V got the sharpest for me on the corners of the browns. I'm sharpening challenged though:)

interesting. i have 2 spyderco military in s30v and i find that i have to use the uf stones to get them really shaving sharp. the fine stones gets them to shaving sharp but doesn't feel silky smooth the way the uf stones do...if it matters, i put significant pressure on them more than say 1095 or vg10 though where i progressively lighten it as i go from medium to uf stones.

That's probably is why. I always tried to use the lightest pressure. On the UF with the S30V included I basically try to float the blade on the ceramic.

Interesting, I've never tried wrapping the rods in wet-or-dry... I'll have to give that a shot, just might be a way to actually get the thing to CUT when you need it to! I love it for maintaining edges, but they really could have offered a coarser set of stones. The diamond sleeves might help, I suppose, but for that price I'll just get a DMT XC Diasharp that I can use for more than just my Sharpmaker's profiling.
