I just purchased a Fallkniven F1 with a zytel sheath (Fee-all-niv-en I believe is how it is pronounced) and I am really looking forward to trying it out. I havent received it yet but have read many good things about it. I was going to go with the BM griptilian fixed blade but decided with this instead.

Actually, it's pronounced something like fellkni:ven.
The F1 is a lovely knife. Congrats.

You are in Sweden,,,surely you must have one of your own. I need a sharpening kit now because I am definately putting it to the test.

I bought an F1 ~1 year ago based on recs on these boards. I love it for camping-- use it for food prep, tinder, etc... a few months ago I bought a P1 with the cocobolo handle for my regular pocket knife -- I've been *really* pleased with it as well-- its very sharp. Now I am waiting on a Manix in the mail-- also based on recs found here. I fear my lurking on this site is starting to turn into a small collecting hobby....

At least you're following the good advice available here. :) That's 3 very fine and very different knives. You'll find the Manix could almost replace your F1.

Thanks. I've really enjoyed reading the opinions/advice on these boards. I will try to chime in a bit more rather than just lurking about. I forgot to mention the jigged bone handle kiwi spyderco I bought last year just because I liked the looks of it-- its so shiny etc that I don't like to use it. I had carried a boye boat knife as my regular pocket knife for awhile then got bored with it. Anyways, thanks to all for the reviews etc. These are very well run, polite forums with lots of interesting material to read.

I think reading people's own experiences and personal reviews really influenced me to go with the Fallkniven. Although I doubt I will really collect knives so much as just buy one and use it until I need another they certainly are fun to look at and see other's collections...well okay maybe a nice folding one now.

Congrats for making up your mind. I'm still in the agonizing different models phase particularly for this size knife.

Thicker blades: Tak-1, Fallkniven F1;
Thinner cutting blades: Rat-3, Spyderco Moran

The plan is to go to a larger chopper with the smaller knife - so in the ideal world it would be the thinner blades. However fiscal responsibility deems that I live with the first purchase for a while - so the thicker ones suite the all-around purpose until the chopper comes on board....Decisions, decisions, decisions....

Thanks any recommendations for sharpening as I have not really spent much time on a better quality model. It would be nice to find some guides.

Snodog,

I believe the fallnkniven has a convex edge. In order to preserve this feature sharpening is usually done with the mousepad/sandpaper method. The following link provides a guide to sharpen a convex edge: http://brkca.com/

Hey kgd....

I've got several hundred knives you can fondle before you buy..

Hey Normark, are those sheaths you have made? The ones on the link in your profile? Kydex is it? I haven't had the opportunity to actually feel or try one of those but what is the advantage over a standard one. I dont like leather myself just because how it deteriorates when being exposed to the elements.

My F1 comes with a zytel sheath and am wondering if a lighter one would be better? Not to offend but I dont really like the extra width that seems to be on all the kydex sheaths I have seen. Anyway around that?

Hi Snodog...

Yes,, those are the sheaths I make...

They are actually made from Concealex..
Similar to Kydex and is widely used in the industry...

Well good quality custom leather will last many years.. Both have their good points and bad...

The advantage over a custom synthetic sheath over a OEM sheath is that they are hand made, with special attention to fit.

This type of sheath will also allow for many different types of belt attachments and ways to carry the knife.. With the stock sheath you are basically limited to one type of carry...

As far as the width of the sheath goes...

Well they can be made slimmer thats not a problem,, however you also limited yourself in some ways, as some clips may stick out slightly..

The only real difference you are going to see is about 1/4" -3/8" difference in width, as well as you have a proven handmade product....

I guess it all depends on what you like..

Thanks for the interest and hope I've answered your questions....
