Finally Picked Up A 4.1 - WOW!

I just picked up a GSO 4.1 from fleabay and instantly could tell I would be using this knife for every intended use, so I found the little things I didn't like about it and put a couple minutes of work into making it fit just right and I gotta say this knife is amazing. This knife will be on my side any time I am in the great outdoors. Deer hunting, camping, trekking, etc.

Because the handle is a tad short IMO I put it on the belt sander and rounded off corners on the butt end so that they wouldn't dig into my palm when holding it in certain ways.

I then sanded down the edges on the front part of the scales for comfort when holding in chest-lever position.

I also put the top of the spine to the belt sander and gave it an edge to strike a firesteel. (I am super glad I got the model with no jimping and no firesteel notch - the knife has really sexy lines)

I'm currently comparing it to the Battle Horse Knives Woodsman Pro, and a Fiddleback Forge Bushfinger.
I've also had (and sold) a couple Bark Rivers (Canadian Special, Fox River, Northstar, and a couple others back in the day) but they just didn't seem to meet my needs.

The only real gripe I have about this knife is not about the knife, actually... it's the sheath. The sheath is great with the exception that it just doesn't ride well. I will be picking up some sort of dangler attachment (or perhaps a whole leather sheath system w/dangler) to make this knife absolutely perfect!

I have a GSO 4.5 on preorder, and I can see myself getting a GSO 6 in the very near future for a bigger chopper/camp chore knife. I am truly impressed with the quality of this blade. Bravo Survive!... bravo.

Congrsts to start off. And I love how you customized it just for you and your needs. That's what its about. If you need a dangler option check out one of our threads through here on the free extension give away(its done already) but chiral makes some good ones and at a reasonable price. Thanks for sharing.

Check out the extra sheathes for battlehorse/blindhorse knoves. They should fit you 4.1 perfectly

The Bushfinger is probably one of Andy Roy's most popular models, and it is surely comfortable in the hand, but I prefer the steel Guy is using in the 4.1. I also like the price point of the 4.1 when you are going to work the knife hard.

Great post! I like your taste in knives.

Chiral makes a really attachment. Glad to hear you have more GSO's on the way!

I figured as long as they aren't just giving them away it's a great sign to see a very healthy secondary market. Means that those who miss the preorders, regular sales, and 2nds, still have a chance to get some Survive! steel from one of us without fear of the dreaded (e)bay. Gives us a chance to turn right around and buy a newer model or an updated version of one we might have wanted, but missed out on, or with the preorders invest in Survive!'s future endeavors. While I may release a few S!K's into the wild every now and then, it always goes right back into my business and what's left seems to go into Guy's acct. :)

I know that someone here had mentioned to both Ellie and Guy about the possibility of starting a Survive! sales thread here. Fiddleback Forge has successfully done this on their sub-forum (Called the Fiddleback Flea Market). All of the same rules apply regarding forum rules for selling. I think that it has worked out well for Andy, and I think that it might be something that Guy considers doing. In the early days, many folks would post their Fiddlebacks for sale in both the Fiddleback page, and the for sale page by individuals. Now I think there is enough traffic that most are only posted on the Fiddleback page. There is a difference though between the two sub-forums. Andy only sells knives through BladeForums, and his website is FYI only. He also sells knives through dealers. In this case, Guy has a website dedicated to sales.

The additional traffic that the secondary market sales thread could generate for the sub-forum here might make it worth the effort. Just a thought.

Great insight in the differences between companies. I would like to see the idea happen, but I wonder how much it would benefit Guy.

Does anyone know how moderators work around here? I wish we had a moderator active in this awesome little place to do moderatory things.

I'm in Waukesha.

You make an excellent point there Mac.

There was a thread in Tech Support the other day where a gentleman asked for a moderator in a different subforum. Seems it had been a bit unruly and the mod on record hadn't logged in for a period of year(s)?? Anyway, Spark responded and said he was open to suggestions for nominations. So a request for a moderator here could probably be pursued through Guy and Ellie, and approved by Spark. Maybe drop RevDevil a PM and find out the proper procedure.

Congrats on the 4.1 CootShooter! I spent part of the day bead-blasting that nice finish off a set of Gunny Hunter scales for better traction, and regrinding the convex into a V-edge saber grind. Nothing like making it your own, man.

Funny you mention the Gunny Hunter... that was my next purchase in the search for the grail knife. Gunny Hunter in Elmax. Although, I think I have found my 'one knife to rule them all' with the GSO 4.1. I think I would feel comfortable with this little-big knife for everything I could throw at it. I'm gonna eventually pick up a GSO 6 just to make sure.

God, I can't stop playing with this thing. I've snapped it in/out of the sheath about a million times since I got it... caress it around in my hand, throw it into a log I have in my den, hold it in a bunch of different grips, whittle some branches I have in my den, hold it some more, take the handles off, mess with the sheath, hold it some more... I'm going to wear this thing out before I even really use it.

Let me see what I can find out.

It's good to hear you love your 4.1 so much!

Now I finally know what is missing in my life, a den! Having a den sounds awesome!
