I am a spyderco lover with one ZT thrown in but was always intrigued by the 550HG since it has the hole for opening. After 3-4 yrs of back n forth on getting a grip I finally found a brand new one today at a local brick n mortar store for a really good price. I carry a PM2 on a regular basis and have for yrs.

I will carry this for awhile and see how I like it but I already find myself really missing the choil that is on the PM2.
Considering all the stuff I read about on here with hit or miss finishing, I can say that the fit n finish on the knife is really good, i.e grind lines are even, really sharp, blade is centered, everything is right.

Either BM have stepped up there QC to coincide with their MAP policy or I got lucky.

I have a question, are the bevels on these things at 20 or lower? Figured a 40 on the sharp maker will be sufficient but I dont know.

QC and MAP pricing have no causal relationship, one has nothing to do with the other. I tend not to wait to long between contemplating a knife I like and buying it. WHile I am not made of cash, if I really like a knife, I buy it and see if it is for me. If it isn't I usually sell it or throw it in a drawer until I can sell it for a minimal loss if any.

I like 550 because they have the hole.

The scales...Less than impressive.
Very durable and serve well. But the hollow sound drove me nutz.

I replaced them with a set of DOATs.

I love the 550 it was my second BM after years of carrying a 9050 for work. I wanted one with the hole as well because I wasn't a fan of thumbstuds after a bad incident of it catching on my pocket. Wasn't a fan of the sheepsfoot blade but it grew on me quickly. When I was carrying it I just touched it up on ceramics from the sharpmaker once a month never had an issue keeping it sharp that way, or the little benchmade pocket sharpener and run it over the back a couple times a month. It now sits in the box in a drawer, but I still love it.

I just picked one of these up as well after losing my Ritter and not wanting to pony up the cash for another. The blade shape is nice but I find the hole to be a bit to recessed into the grip. Does anyone else find this to be the case? I feel like I can just barely get my thumb in the hole to open it up, whereas the hole feels much more accessible on my Spydercos.

You must have hulk size thumb. I have 555,550 and do have this problem. In fact they work really well, and use bigger grips such as wilkins. I have large size hand.
I only use the top tip of the hole to grip it, probably end up with half moon in print on thumb instead of the whole one if that makes any sense.

After carrying for a few days I do feel like the hole is a little undersized as compared to spyderco's and it is not as easy to open. I do like the knife but I have been carrying both a PM2 and the grip for a few days now and I find myself grabbing the PM2 more. I will keep the grip, as there is a place for it in my EDC.

Thing is stupid sharp after I put it on a strop. Cut my damn thumb...

If I ever get a 550HG, I would absolutely go for the custom program. I'd get myself the black D2 blade, sand colored handles (royal blue is nice too, tough call), and all black hardware, and the black oxide clip.

I got a 555 customized and went with the S30V blade and black hardware...very nice combo I think.

Really liking this 550, now this 551-1 is starting to look really good. I need more money.
