Yup, it's a well made "brute" just like the knife!
Joss,
That's a "Bandit" or as they used to be called, "One Armed Bandit". I had a couple around that I picked up at a knife show years ago but they're available from Smokey Mountain Knifeworks, (
www.eknifeworks.com). Look under "Bandit". I had a couple of the "XL" ones but I still had to cut it down with a Dremel and file to fit this thick blade. It's only temporary because I'm going to drill the blade and install a permanent thumbstud. The Bandits work well though and they're removable if you want to bring the knife back to stock.
BadGuy,
They're hard to find. You have to really search for them on the knife forums because they rarely come up for sale. These early 3003A's with the brown Micarta, (Al Mar called it "green" Micarta), are especially hard to find. The later models came with scalloped "rubber-like" scales. They do come up occasionally on Eboyohboy.
It's weird though because as you found out, some German and Japanese sites still offer them for sale even though they haven't been manufactured in years. The problem would be in custom taxes which could be high. The overseas examples had SERE shields and markings on the bolsters and scales and the U.S. models didn't.
These SERES are real tanks and beg to be used hard. If you don't like BIG folders and "brick-like" weight, then you won't like them. The blades are AUS-6 stainless which a lot of folks think is "cheap" steel but I find it a very useable steel and it is so easy to sharpen. If you can find one of these, try it. You'll be amazed at how well things were made just a few short years ago.
