Grotesquely stupid.

I dont know if it was the casio keyboard soundtrack or the amiga computer graphics or the "stomp" musical dance routines that I loved the most...

Its like Kurosawa was the only Japanese person who knew what a movie was supposed to be and none of the other Japanese caught on....

Is this the one by Takeshi kitano? I like some of his other gangster pictures, but this one is supposedly very "different."
Just so you know, Kurosawa was constantly called "too Western" by his country.

That makes sense..
Japanese typically condemn the Japanese who are hailed by the rest of tthe world.

(Different is a good word for it. The huge choreographed and senseless synchronized tap routine at the end made me wretch)

There is a small wave of truly GREAT Japanese thrillers and gangster flicks coming out today. I mean great. IFC runs something called pulp fri once a week on....friday!

Danny,

Thats to bad as I was looking forward to seeing it.

I'm a huge fan of the original series with Shintaro Katsu. One of our cable channels has a program on saturday mornings called "Samurai Saturday". That's where I got hooked on these type of films. Unfortunately, they've only run 4 or 5 of them. I think I may try to buy the series (if I can stay away from khukuris long enough ;) )

Shintaro Katsu's brother, Wakayama Tomisaburo. Also did a really neat series called "Lone Wolf & Cub" . I've seen a few of those and I really like them. The character he plays isn't as lovable as old Zatoichi but it's still a good series. Especially on how he interacts with his young son (the cub). He portrays a very caring father.

And I do agree about Kurosawa. I guess he was to "westernized" for the japanese taste but I sure like his work.

I think my favorite actor though is Toshiro Mifune. He kind of reminds me of a "japanese john wayne".

I guess I'll wait until the new zatoichi comes out on DVD.

BTW
how do you pronounce zatoichi
I know I'm not saying it correctly as I say it like it looks, zaa- tow- chee

thanks

Mark T.

"za- toe- ee- chee"

man, this film is crazy stupid!

there are like five different stomp routines.
( you know, the dance and rythym group STOMP)

all of the tattoos are poorly faked (except for one guy who had a real one)

the time frame goes back and forth.
there is an 1880's revolver in it, lots of goatees and other modern hairdos...

that plus , like I said, a huge tap routine with all of the characters in the show that goes on for five minutes and makes no sense whatsoever.

When Japanese want to know what samurai life was like, they go see "last samurai" with tom cruise.

Japanese movies and TV are for the NUTHOUSE.

Really? They rely on an americanized version of samurai life to learn about their culture?

amazing

wich is why i say long live tokyo shock and takashi miike! :D :D

and i would say mayazaki, but he's out of the game... or so he says

Thanks! First my computer burned up  then my son was born last Saturday night (about a week before he was expected) so I'm really not here at the moment -- we're about to go out to buy bigger bras for my wife. :D ;) :D

Yes, bigger bras are always cause for glee and celebration....

But Congratulations on the birth of your child!!! That really is neat.
