Been meaning to do this ever since I picked up a Tighe Stick when they were going cheap a few years ago. Not a perfect job esthetically - at some point I'll probably take it apart, clean up the blade a bit more and take another 1/4" off the hook - but I'm happy how it turned out.

I've always wondered why no manufacturers have ever introduced a "thumb hook" which might incidentally happen to wave out of the pocket.

Nice! I always pictured this when looking at the Tighe Stick😎👍

I think I'd actually be a little more aggressive with it if I found one for a good price🤔

As mentioned, I think I should take another 1/4" off the end of the hook - it would still wave just fine without it. But I like the wider internal radius on the hook - more comfortable for thumb opening than an Emerson-style wave. As it is, it's still got all of the parts of the spydiehole that you actually use when opening the blade.

I also don't have tools that will allow me to cut a smooth v-notch very easily. If I did, I'd probably be putting a wave (above / behind the spydiehole, not cutting it) on my Yojimbo and Hundred Pacer as well.

Interesting.

Not something that I'd do to mine but it looks like a very nicely executed mod based on the concept.

Nice job! Didn't know they were ever cheap! A picture closed would be nice. So you did this to wave out of your pocket?

They were originally about $290, and then reduced to something around $215-220 at close out, IIRC. That’s what I meant by cheap(er). It’s all relative.

Closed picture below. I did it so that it could be waved, whilst still being just as easy to thumb open as the original, and to rescue it from being the Quasimodo of knives (although the extra long hook is still a bit funky-looking).

I especially like how you've crowned the spine and blended it to the grind and how you've left enough spyderhole to slow roll with your thumb! ;)

The problem I've had with waved models is that they oftentimes work TOO WELL!

Sometimes I just want to pull my knife out WITHOUT deploying the blade...it takes extra effort and thoughtfulness to take my waved Civilian out of my pocket without <at least partially> opening the blade.

It can startle  an unsuspecting person if they're not familiar with you...

and I've even considered what could happen if I were ordered to "empty pockets" by an LEO 😲 and it deployed. A bit far-fetched, but still worth considering.

90% of the work involved trying to get a nice smooth sweep to the arc of the reground spine. The slight crowning, which was done on a WorkSharp, hides a multitude of sins in that regard.

To me it seems a no-brainer to develop a "thumb hook" that will work as a wave and thumb opener, but not something any manufacturer has done as far as I'm aware. CS's protruding thumb disks are functionally equivalent, but I'd rather avoid studs and disks that get in the cutting path.

A waved knife does require a bit of mindfulness, especially with such a big hook. I chant "om mani padme hum" every time I take it out of my pocket.
