How do you approach Blade with the family budget in mind?

1. Establish an amount that you can afford to spend, with predetermined knife categories and goals, and keep with the plan?

2. Take the credit card and just fly by the seat of your pants.

3. Just looking.

4. Screw the family budget.

I take the engineer's approach, number 1 above. However, being ultra-conservative, I usually bring money home, not spending the limit if my wife is not there. If she is there, she is an "enabler", and at her urging to "get it now while you can or you'll regret it later", I may go over my limit. Unfortunately, she will not be there with me this year, as she has a teacher training class scheduled for that week.:(

I would be happy to be a stand in enabler. Hand your budget over to me and I'll be sure that it is all spent before you leave. ;)

I fall somewhere between 1 and 2. I have a plan on what to spend and what I'm looking for, but leave room for the unexpected must have that I didn't save for.

Come on Mike, you know a Hog never reveals his strategy!!!

I'll go with #4, it's only money, now a knife you can do something with!

:D

In the stunning presence of AMY O - how can you resist??

And then there is the ever pervasive charm of the J-Man himself, as he casually walks you down the table.........

Resistance is FUTLIE!!

Again that is why I suggest direct deposit of your paycheck into Bank Busse. Just saves a lot of hassel and trouble. -- Process Improvement!

I start at 1 and end up at 2. :) :foot:

Mike -- I'm sure Kim will happily be your "enabler" this year.

Yeah, I've got a feeling approach 1 will rapidly devolve into 2.

The idea of "plastic" does segue into a legit question for a first-time Blade visitor. Will I be okay with plastic-only on the show floor or do I need a roll of cash (however small, ) for the vendors?

Not that I'm likely to spend much cash outside of booth 59,60, 61 but you never know what you might find used, right??

It is very common for gun dealers to add a 3% surcharge for credit card purchases, both in shop and at gun shows. I don't know about knives, but I would not be surprised if a lot of makers and dealers did this.

Looked at another way, the cost of credit card transactions is thus not spread across all the customers paying by cash or check.

I roam and look as I have enough knives already (if that is possible). If I see something very interesting and the price is right and I can sell the knife that I am replacing for about what the newer better one costs then I might bite.

It is fun for me to take someone new in the hobby who is just starting for a first hand look at some serious knives and to assist them in making a good selection. Blade is overwhelming for a newbie. If you were to lay all those sharp blades end-to-end you would never reach a conclusion!

Blade will have a enormous "vacumm effect" on my pocket. No matter how much I bring, I'll probably come back owin more money!!:D I'll have my son(Stabber Jr) with me, so ifin you see a rather large 13yr old for sale or auction????:p I just need to keep enough in the other pocket for Drinkin;)

CC's should be OK, but somehow I found myself running down to the ATM machine in the food court to cover an unexpected find. I'm going to try and avoid that trap this year.

Sounds good.

Mike, ya know, ya know, ya know ......

Everything is going to plan, then Jerry pops something out that you weren't planning on AND that you cannot live without and you just gotta have. LOL

Plan ahead, then be ready for suprises.
