Haven't posted here before 'cause I know from nothing about sword.

Question is, where can I get that basic-basic training in my neck of the woods? I live in the sticks in central Missouri.

Any MA requires a basic scaffold on which to hang what you can get from books, videos etc. I am interested in western style swordmanship. I did have a summer's worth of escrima, but don't feel that was long enough to really learn anything.

My only thought is to enroll in a college class in fencing. I suspect that because of my ADVANCED years, that might not be too practical. Naturally, my interest is in self defense applications.

Suggestions please.

It's a shame you don't live one state down, we've got a great group here in Arkansas.
I'll ask around tomorrow at practice and see if anyone knows of a group or salle' in Central MO.

I don't know about advanced age. I started western style fencing about 7 years ago (I did take a semester in college, and I have been involved with MA since I was 16). I am now the ripe age of 50, I still fence, I practice with live blades (I own all three Paul Chen Small Swords, plus some customs), and I think that I can pretty much dispatch a lot of "cocky and unsuspecting" youngsters.

Ability is often acquired through attitude and effort. I also found that I was really getting beat up in Kendo

No luck so far Soldier.
There's my group here in AR, and one in OK that works with earlier blades,(cut and thrust I believe) but if there's anything in MO they're awfully quiet.

Good luck finding instruction. It can be a real bear. I have approached several different groups and I now study with Swordplay Alliance. I am lucky enough to be in their area. I have been very happy with the instruction I have received. Good luck.
