How is the knife collecting interest in Canada? Are there many old knives like Case, Cattaraugus, KA-BAR, Marble's etc...to be found at flea markets, antique shops etc... like Ontario for instance? Is there much interest in antique knives in the North? I would think there would be many knives around with all the hunting and fishing that takes place. Just don't here much about it.

Thanks,

John

Collector interest is not great for most hunters and such so there are a few older Marbles and such floating around but not often in good condition. These things tended to get used hard.

There is some interest in military patterns and little or no interest in folders compared to the US.

There uesd to be a little surplus store called "City Surplus" up north in a town called Sudbury.

I used to stop there on my way north for hunting. They always had a good selection of knives, only new stuff. They also had a very good selection of sleeping bags, tents and outdoor clothing.

I remember their prices being far better than any of the outdoor/adventure stores in Toronto/Mississauga.

It's been a while since I've been up that way but I hope they're still there.

City Surplus is still around. I'm from the Sudbury area and have shopped there since the 1960s. Never seen very many knives there that appealed to me though. The selection is smaller than it used to be and appears to be mainly Buck knives. Not too many good places to buy knives in Sudbury-we don't have the House of Knives anymore.

I've purchased a number of old military knives in the Toronto area such as Cattaraugus, KA-BAR, Fairbairn-Sykes daggers, Civil War knives, German and French trench knives...

There's a place in the Toronto Antique Centre on Queen Street that sells old military knives and swords. Their prices are pretty high though.

Also bought quite a few knives from the Military Antiques Trading Post in Richmond Hill. Bought others at the Military Collectors Club of Canada shows and the Toronto Antique Arms and Military shows.

Even though we do enough hunting and fishing in the Great White North it can be difficult to find desireable old knives.

I'm from Alberta and have found a few reasonbly nice old pocket knives at garage sales and flea markets, but usually what you come across is junk. The nicest one I have found was an old stag handled Case 62086 in pretty good shape. I have come across some old Schrades and an original Hen & Rooster, but it was in rough shape. I only paid $20.00 for the Case, which was a steal. The others cost me $5.00 to $10.00 bucks. I'm like a kid in a candy store when I find one of these old treasures; even if they're not in good shape.
