Finding Ranger Bands - a tip.

I stopped at a local bike shop, late on a Saturday (they do a TON of work on Saturday's - especially fix flats), and asked them if they had any intertubes they could give me.

They walked over to a bun they were going to use to recycle intertubes and handed me about 5.

They asked what they were for and I told they were great at holding PSK's and BOB cases and that they were highly flammable and made great tinder.

They, of course looked at me like I was crazy and had no clue what I was talking about - I laughed and left.

Yup. The guys in the Bike shop at REI were happy to give me a couple of used tubes. When I told them how handy they were for holding gear and the like they fished out a couple for themselves. If I ever find myself in a motorcycle shop (something Mrs FLIX is actively seeking to prevent), I'll try to get a m/c tube, so I can make some larger diameter ones.

Good idea. Plenty of useful free stuff to be had, just need to find it. Have to pay a bike shop a visit now.

Slip a few ranger bands over your backpack straps and push your knife sheath under them.
I've also heard you can slip a wide ranger band over the opening of a Zippo and it will prevent leakage.

Yup. I custom cut bike inner tubes to cover my Zippo. Fuel lasts much, much longer.

Both good ideas, but the zippo one is great. Can put one on the opening to prevent leakage and another on top with tinder in between.

Another source for big ranger bands: Motorcycle inner tubes. These can be around 2-3 inches in diameter, and are good full-sized rubber bands. If you have a local motorcycle shop, they will often give you free flat tubes.

I used to ride a bike with skinny tires, so I still have a ton of skinny tire tubes laying around (25C) that make great small ranger bands. They fit perfectly around a Bic, to make for convenient storage and carry.

Hey TF, I made a fishing kit like yours out of a county comm tube vault. I used a ranger band(old innertube) to slide over the line to keep it secured when not in use. Works great!!

Also did a few other mods to it that are cool.
