I'm having the hardest time finding some wire rope to make damascus. I've tried crane and rigging companies, I can't find any cable places that sellanything but galvanized and stainless, and it seems that there are not any scrap yards in my area that sell scrap. I live in the Atlanta, GA area, so if anyone around here knows were to find some cable, or if anyone has any tips in general, I would really appreciate it. I haven't had my forge too long, and I just got some flux and was all excited about forging a wire rope knife, and now i can't find any wire rope :(. Thanks for any help.

I would suggest that, for the first time around at least, you order some 1095 cable from Sheffield. You'll know what you're geting that way.

Check on construction sites. Most likly if there's a crane they may have some old chockers that they should toss. Also large concrete buildings such as parking garages that are under construction usually do post tension beams where cable is used. Its called "strand" cause it has 7 wires in it. After they put tension on the cables the tails are cut off and tossed. You won't get much of a pattern from it but its very high carbon. You got a cable for your emergency brake.....

hahahha Raymond.

Heck, if ya wanna go that route, got clutch and throttle cables if ya got a motorcycle, and your kids bikes have break and shifter cables too. THey don't really need a ten speed anyways. ;)

I would recommend only using new cable as old cable is full of rust and dirt making for more difficult welding and higher chance of inclusions.

There is a hardware store in my area (WA state) which sells extra improved plowshare (1084) grade cable to the logging industry.

You might try a logging supply company or elevator company if any near you?

Also, twist up the cable (at a welding heat) to get a nice pattern.
