Finding the best EDC for my preference

Hey guys, first post but did some research on here about what to look for in choosing my next edc blade.

My first edc blade was the CKRT M16. I was happy with it's ergonomic hold, blade strength, and fast kinetic deploy. My only gripe that the blade got dull fast but sharpened back easily.

After retiring that blade I picked up a CKRT M16-13SF. First impressions is it is a little smaller than the m16, the dual nubs to prevent slipping on forward thrusts (just in case of such a situation being a primary EDC blade), and has a smaller profile which is a bigger plus over the M16. Now after reading the mostly negative vibes about it, I want to balance the pros and cons of this blade and compare similar blades for the price range of $60.

I'm curious about the prefered choice of blade style and metal, as AUS 8 steel has mixed opinions. Primary purpose is EDC, so my uses will vary from opening packages, plastic, and SD. It will need to have a fast deployment method (nothing spring loaded to keep legal in PA), something that when looking at Spyderco, is something that it lacks in my opinion.

I am relatively new to blades so the best way for me to learn is to lay out what I would need a blade for as they are very subjective to what purpose it will be used for. I got 30 days to try out the M16SF so it would give me plenty of time to try it out. Also, I'm .mil so if any brands give good discounts let me know.

Thanks!

Get a Spyderco Manix 2 or a Benchmade Griptilian. Both have better steel and IMHO better construction.

Imho, if you want a fast deployment folder, you won't get anything faster than a Spyderco Endura Wave...

My recommendation is to try out a Kershaw Groove. It's cheap, solidly built from quality materials, and it has one of the best flippers in any price range.

For something a bit more expensive and "high tech", look at the Kershaw RAM. It employs a unique locking system that makes it one of the fastest opening and closing knives in existence.

Primary use would be every day carry. Light to medium cutting from opening boxes, plastic, as well as self defense. It will be carried in my jean side pocket so size is a consideration. It will need to deploy fast without the aid of spring loaded mechanisms. The suggestions so far are interesting, especially the Spyderco Wave, never seen a design like that.

Well, I think that Spyderco's open as fast as many other manual folders. All you have to do is oil the pivot and adjust the pivot screw and you're golden.

I recommend looking into Spyderco's offerings for a good EDC. The Tenacious/Persistence are good knives for the price point. They are solidly built, have good ergonomics and a nice full flat grind.

If you want some knives with higher end steels, check out the Endura/Delica series. VG10 holds a very sharp edge and is easy to sharpen. You have your choice of a saber grind or full flat grind with the Endura/Delica knives. They really are a bargain in the $55 to $60 range.

all knives get dull, all dull knives need sharpening, some people like coke and some like pepsi. don't be too concerned about reviews. judge for yourself.
nothing wrong with crkt. some will like it some won't

I have carried my CRKT M16-13T all over the world. Has never failed me yet. I too have been looking for a new EDC knife, but a lot of the newer designs are a bit too "funky" for my tastes.

The Benchmade Stryker has a nice straight profile like the M16s and comes in a tanto version as well. It's a fast assisted opener but not an auto so it should be legal in PA. Also comes in two sizes. I have the 3" blade and it's great for edc. They're also really light. The D2 blade steel stays sharp for a long time. You can find them for around $80.

One of my best is one of my cheepest. The gerber mini covert cuts far above its weight, good steel as the name says covert I think a very under rated knife:thumbup:
