Finding the right Kershaw or ZT for my Lady

I recently moved into a beautiful condo with my fiancé. As the weather has gotten nicer, we've found that there are a few areas nearby that are pretty shady (we live in Boston.)

I am trying to find the right EDC / defensive blade for my lady. I got her a Leek, which she carries and uses, but I'd like to get her something a little more tactical.

I am thinking an 0350, thermite or 0566. I had an 0350 that I gave away to a friend when he moved here. I think it might be just a tad too big for her.

I'm looking for something that is light, has good traction, fast deployment, dependable lockup and is not too large that it won't be comfortable or too big to carry.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

How 'bout 0700. It's light relatively thin, good traction, stout blade, thick liners.

Or maybe a Griptilian. Both are fantasmic choices.

OR my number 1 choice.
Taser, pepper spray, a gun, or something else that can keep her at a distance from an attacker.
Because (depending on her size, training, etc) a bigger sized person will be able to take the knife away pretty easily.

My wife's favorite is my 0301. Guess that's why she stole it from me

Not what I would have guessed, but the point is to ask her what she likes, you might be surprised.

my lady likes the tanto zing I have. well.....she has now. she had a leek that I need to replace, but the zing she likes a lot, and wants me to get scales made for it. I got mine from Kershawguy.

If I remember correctly, the city of Boston has a limit of 2.5 inches for the blade which is even worse than the city of Los Angeles with 3 inches. That's why I have a bunch of folders with 3" blade lengths. Outside the city I'm fine and the beefy ZT blades get to leave the house.

Pepper spray is good so is a well lit cigar. The latter is what I used to defend myself in a mugging years ago! I still remember the ambers exploding on the perp's face!

Depends on carry method, in pocket I would say g10 leek when it's warm. I'd polish the blade to make it look a bit more intimidating (that's really all a knife will do for her unless she's trained up). Purse carry she'll need something large enough to find and actuate quickly, maybe a 030x series.

However I strongly suggest pepper spray! Little to no training, and very effective.

I would also recommend self defense classes, and potentially firearms training.

If you want to feel that she's safe, do any of the above. If you want her to be safe, do all of the above.
My $.02

Started my girl with a cryo, less than 6 months later I was getting her a knockout at her request

Thank you for all of the suggestions.

I train in a Russian martial arts called systema that teaches you to use psychology and anatomy to your advantage in a self defense situation. I've passed on a lot of my knowledge to her.

I want her to have a knife as a last line of defense, not as a primary defensive tool. She is a tough gal and is also very level headed in confrontational situations.

I will definitely check out some of the models mentioned. I've owned several of them and know that they are too big for her (301, 05X0, possible the 0350.) there is also the issue of the 2.5" blade length ordinance, although cops don't typically measure the blade length with a ruler, they measure it against their palm.

Pepper spray is already something she is carrying.

My girlfriend loves her scallion. She's used my knives but prefers the scallion. She used it last night to saw off the splash guard on her car because it was dragging after she ran over a curb (center median) while driving home. Women..

With a better grasp of your situation and intent, you might look at the knockout or piston, and wait for the 0566. In reference to the leek, the 566 would be a Franken Child of the 056x and a leek...sort of.

I've already preordered the 0566. I think my gal will end up taking it from me. She has tiny hands. The 0300 & 0560 are way too big for her comfort.

Unfortunately, I don't have any knife stores nearby where she could try out a few kershaws / ZTs. I think I'll just keep ordering a bunch of different models for myself and let her take her pick. That'll give me an excuse to broaden my folder collection.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
