Just experienced the fun of sprinkling coarse silicon carbide powder on a coarse oilstone that wasn't cutting as well as when it was new. It did a great job grinding a bevel into my knife. Got the idea from reading posts here and at kfc about how folks use nagura stones to spread a fine slurry of aluminum oxide particles on top of their ultra-fine (6000+ grit) waterstones which are usually also made of aluminum oxide. Goose, gander, grinding, good.

Great idea Thom, thanks! I just got my Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000 benchstones this weekend, and am having fun playing catch up to you!

Sodak,

You're ahead of me if you already have your Nortons. Lightyears if you have a hand grinder and those 4.5" grinding wheels Alvin recommended. Heck, if you have a flat iron or flat mild steel plate to use with the silicon carbide powder, you're even more ahead of me.
